Android Oreo update: Update rolling out to LG V20, Galaxy A8 2016, and U.S. unlocked Galaxy S7

Android Oreo release

While a majority of Android smartphones are now running Android Nougat, a good number of flagship phones from various vendors have either received or are getting ready to receive the update to Android 8.0 Oreo.

Other than Google, the likes of Nokia, OnePlus, Sony, Huawei, LG, HTC, Asus, Lenovo and recently Samsung have joined the Oreo bandwagon, but given Samsung’s market share and the fact that only the Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8 and a handful of others, including the 2016 Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, have received Oreo, the OS has only reached a little over 1% of all Android devices. Other OEMs are still testing the OS on older devices ahead of rollout.

Now that we have established this, let’s address the elephant in the room: When will the update hit your device or even better, will your device ever get the update in the first place?

Here is an OEM-wise list of phones that should get the Oreo update.

Asus

Going by its history, Asus is pretty slow when it comes to rolling out big OS updates, that is for flagship handsets. Things get even worse for the mid-range handsets. Although possible, we don’t see that changing this year as well. In the best case scenario, Asus’s flagship handsets should receive the Android Oreo update within 4-5 months from the day Google announces it. Users with mid-range devices from Asus may have to wait for a little longer.

Asus already confirmed that its smartphones under the ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 3 series will get the Android Oreo update. So, that’s some good news to start off. Here’s a list.

Gionee

The same holds true for Gionee as well. The company hasn’t been the one to focus on the software side of things, for the most part. So, expecting an Android Oreo update is close to dreaming if you own mid-range Gionee handsets. Flagship handsets (albeit very small) stand a chance to get the update.

Minus the ZUK series phones (and Motorola, of course), Lenovo has had a bad reputation when it comes to rolling out new software updates especially the big ones. And we don’t see that changing this year. Which means most of the handsets from Lenovo may not get the Android 8.0 Oreo update. Not anytime soon, at least.

LG

There haven’t been any sorts of announcements by LG as far as the Android Oreo update is concerned. So, at this point in time, it’s hard to predict when and to which devices will the latest update will be rolled out. Meizu

Meizu again is another Chinese company that releases smartphones frequently but doesn’t bother to care about big OS updates. Most of its phones including the flagship ones haven’t received an update to Nougat itself. So, Android Oreo seems a bit out of the equation at this point in time.

Motorola

Motorola’s handsets run near-Stock Android, and the company has always been very keen on faster Android update release. Which means eligible Motorola devices will get the Android 8.0 Oreo update pretty soon. As far as eligible devices are concerned, Motorola Moto Z, Moto G, and Moto X series handsets released in the past two years (mentioned below) should receive the update.

There are only slim chances that Moto E4 and E4 Plus too receive the Oreo update, while we don’t think Moto C and C Plus will get it.

Update 15/9/2017: Motorola has announced the devices that will receive Oreo update.

Update [December 30, 2017]: Nokia has confirmed the Android Oreo update for the Nokia 2. Which is great, not only because it’s just a $99 device, but also because with just 1 GB of RAM onboard, we didn’t really think it would see a day on Oreo. Nokia revealed that they plan to release the Android 8.1 update (0.1 better than Android 8.0 Oreo) for the Nokia 2, and that while it won’t run on Android Go (Android 8.1 Oreo edition) build, the company will take memory management clues from the Android Go program to optimize its Android 8.1 update for the device.

Oppo

Except for a couple of handsets, most of the smartphones launched by Oppo in this and last year are still on Android Marshmallow. While a majority of these handsets feature hardware good enough to support Android O, we highly doubt the likelihood of these devices getting an update to the latest Android OS.

At best, they could be upgraded to Android Nougat, that is if Oppo cares to push a software update.

If you are one of them, we have a handy guide on how to install ColorOS 5.0 on Oppo R11s and R11s Plus here.

LeEco

Given the company’s current position in the industry, LeEco will most likely ignore the Android Oreo update. So, it’s wise not to get your hopes high in case you own a LeEco phone. On the brighter side, you can become friends with the XDA Developers forum where there are plenty of custom ROMs for your LeEco phone based on Android Oreo.

American carrier Verizon Wireless has, on March 15, 2018, kicked off the Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. The updates are rolling out over the air and they also include February’s Android security patches.

It’s a surprise that Verizon is rolling out Oreo ahead of T-Mobile, which has in the recent past been one of the best in software updates. But hey, this is what it should be like when you are the leading carrier in the country.

Update [April 13, 2018]: Canada’s Fido has confirmed that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will receive Android Oreo in May.

Update [February 10, 2018]: After numerous uncertainties over the status of Android Oreo update for the 2015 Galaxy S6 series and Galaxy Note 5, T-Mobile has finally confirmed that the OS will be rolled out to the 3-year old handsets. The American carrier has updated its software update page for the phones, indicating that it has agreed with Samsung to update the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5 to Android Oreo, but we don’t know when the OS will start rolling out.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile has confirmed that the Oreo update is under the plans for Galaxy J7 Prime, and that is in in the ‘Manufacturer development’ stage right now.

Sony

Sony is yet to reveal its plans for the Android Oreo update. But it’s among the first one to release the major Android update for its devices, and kudos to them for that. Last year, with Nougat, they were among the first ones to bring the Nougat update for then flagships under the beta program, and we hope for the same with Oreo update too. We think some Sony Android smartphones would receive the Oreo update before the end of December 2017.

Sony was the first non-Google OEM to unveil an Oreo-powered phone. The company is also among the few who have updated nearly all of their compatible handsets to the new OS, with the latest to join the group being the midrange Xperia X and X Compact. These two started receiving Oreo in early February, just like we had anticipated.

Vivo

Vivo, akin to its Chinese counterparts, is no good when it comes to pushing the Android software updates to its devices. Most of its devices are still on Android Marshmallow and Lollipop which means Android Oreo isn’t going to come to these handsets anytime soon if not ever.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has been pretty late to roll out the Android Nougat update to most of its handsets. And judging by its history, we don’t expect the company to push the Oreo update anytime soon. Perhaps, its most recent flagship handsets including the Xiaomi Mi 6 could get the update sometime in early 2018. The company hasn’t revealed its plans for Android O just yet.

Though, we think these devices would surely the Oreo released for them. Xiaomi could release the Oreo OTA for more devices, but we would wait until they make an announcement to confirm such devices.

ZTE, as of now, is yet to confirm or reveal its plans for the upcoming Android Oreo update. The company has released a good number of phones since last year. While not all of these handsets will receive the update, a few will most likely do. We will update the post as and when we learn more details.

The ZTE Axon 7 is being tested for Android Oreo. This started in mid-February and for how long it goes on we still can’t tell. The company had promised to roll out the update somewhere in April and looking at the current status, it’s likely to be the case. ZTE had in December 2017 revealed that they plan to roll out the Axon 7 Oreo sometime in April 2018.

So, that’s the Oreo update scenario for Android phones that are currently available in the market.

Samsung seems to have the largest count of Android phones that will get Oreo update, even though a bit later than most. But it’s still good, right? While, Chinese and Indian OEMs are pretty rubbish with updates — we’re looking at you: Vivo, Oppo, Gionee, Micromax, Lava, etc.

What do you think about the whole update situation on Android?
