LG Android 9 Pie update: Available for V30, V40, V35, G7, and G7 One

LG Pie update device list

LG is one of the most popular names in the Android smartphone world, but things are not that rosy in the South Korean mobile phone camp. Despite everything, the company hasn’t stopped taking care of its devices with regular software updates and we expect the same to continue with respect to LG Android 9 Pie updates.

Unlike Sony, Motorola, and HTC, LG has yet to make any official communication with regard to Android 9 Pie update release date for its devices, but we do have an idea of which devices are guaranteed to receive the OS, be it this year or even next year.

If your LG device is missing in the table above, it’s likely because it won’t receive an official update to Android 9 Pie.

Expected release date

  • Android 9 Pie update available for LG G7 One, V30, LG V35, and V40
  • Most recent LG flagships to get Pie in Q3 2019

We expected the V40 to be the first to receive the LG Android 9 Pie update, but LG gave this honor to the Android One-based LG G7 One. Next in line was the LG G7 ThinQ and later the LG V35 ThinQ and V40 ThinQ joined the party in Q2 2019.

As for the LG V30 and V30S, the wait could go all the way to the end of Q2 2019 before Pie arrives.

LG G6 Pie update, on the other hand, could arrive in Q3 2019, most likely alongside the LG V20, which got its Oreo update in July 2018, a couple of weeks before Android Pie was released. The Pie update is also expected to hit the likes of LG Q Stylus, LG Stylo 4, LG Q7 and LG Q8, but we have no idea when LG plans to roll out the OS to these devices. If anything, they could join the party somewhere in Q3 or even Q4 2019.

What to expect

LG doesn’t have the worst custom skin out there, but neither is it the best on the market. The fact that it’s lightweight also means that there won’t be significant changes in functionality when compared to stock Android, but of course, there will be a few tweaks here and there to fit LG’s idea of how Android should work.

While there might be some changes to the overall UI, core Android Pie features will remain intact. We are talking features like smart replies, better notification management, app actions, app slices, gestures for navigation, digital wellbeing, and so on.

Unofficial Android Pie update

LG’s devices aren’t getting any popular in the development community, but this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get unofficial Android Pie updates for your LG phone. Of course, not all devices will, for instance, receive support for Pie-based LineageOS 16 when it comes out later this year, but we expect to see the likes of LG G5, LG V10 and even the 2015 LG G4 get support from not just LineageOS 16, but also a myriad of other Android 9 Pie custom ROMs.

So far, Google’s Project Treble is driving the agenda of early Android 9 custom ROMs and while the currently available options still have no room for any LG device, it shouldn’t be long before this position changes.
