- Pricing starts at $399 in the U.S., with store availability beginning September 18, 2026.
Health sensing, readiness, and fitness tracking
The Health Sensing System combines a third-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor, a blood oxygen sensor, and a temperature sensor. Larger, more power-efficient green LEDs let the optical sensor take background heart rate readings every five seconds. Heart rate variability, or HRV, is measured as often as every five minutes. Apple lists background heart rate readings as 60x more frequent and HRV readings as 24x more frequent than on Series 11.
The updated Heart Rate app separates recovery HRV from overall HRV. Recovery HRV focuses on daily stress and recovery, while overall HRV provides broader health insights, including cardiovascular health. Higher variability is generally associated with better recovery; lower variability can indicate stress. A new heart rate complication puts your current reading on the watch face.
Check health measurements and requirements
Health sensing explorer: tap each Health Sensing System sensor and each new health feature to see what it measures and how often, in Apple’s words.
The Vitals app brings together heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and HRV. Overnight vitals compares recovery HRV with your personal baseline. A new daytime view lets you switch between daytime and overnight metrics, helping you spot changes before the next night’s readings.
Readiness combines recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score into a 0–10 score. Its recommendations are Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, and Go For It. The score updates as new information arrives, including workouts and changes in daytime vitals.
Redesigned pedometer algorithms improve distance measurements during indoor walk and run workouts, while the S11 chip supports more accurate daily step counts. The new Steps complication displays your count on the watch face.

Sleep apnea notifications are for people 18 or older without a sleep apnea diagnosis, and cycle deviation notifications inclusive of perimenopause are for people 40 or older.
The redesigned Health app and Health Age
The redesigned Health app is coming late 2026, starting in U.S. English. It requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with the latest software, with some features available only on iPhone. Some features require users to be 18 or older, and availability varies by region and language.
The Insights tab presents daily metrics and trends across heart health, sleep, fitness, vitals, readiness, and cycle tracking. Personalized guidance responds to that information, such as suggestions for adjusting a sleep routine. The Longevity tab analyzes health data over time across areas including heart health, sleep, and movement.
Health Age uses Apple Watch metrics including VO2 max, HRV, and sleep to show how those measurements track relative to your actual age. It requires Apple Watch, and blood work can add more information. Movement evaluations assess flexibility, strength, and balance using vision-based models on iPhone together with Apple Watch heart rate data.
Through the Health app, you will be able to schedule and purchase labs that feature over 50 key biomarkers for $119 at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the U.S.

Neither band is water resistant, and Modern Buckle contains magnets that may interfere with Compass. Apple Watch Hermès Series 12 comes in radiant gold and exclusive silver titanium, and the collection adds the new Noir satin Clou de Selle and Rocabar Club bands.
Display, chip, connectivity, and durability
Apple Watch Series 12 has built-in GPS that tracks workout distance, pace, and routes independently of your iPhone. GPS + Cellular adds calls, messages, notifications, and Apple Music and Apple Podcasts streaming without your iPhone nearby.

Apple says Ceramic Shield 2 is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11 aluminum models. The water resistance rating supports shallow-water swimming in pools or the ocean and snorkeling to 6 meters. Series 12 is not intended for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other high-velocity water sports. Water resistance can diminish over time.
Precision Finding for iPhone requires second-generation Ultra Wideband hardware in both the watch and iPhone.
Emergency SOS lets you call emergency services and share your location by holding the side button. Fall Detection and Crash Detection can automatically help contact emergency services and notify emergency contacts after a detected hard fall or severe car crash. International emergency calling requires a cellular model and is available in supported countries and regions.
Series 12 has no Emergency SOS via satellite. Emergency SOS needs a cellular connection or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone.
Battery life and fast charging
Apple says outdoor workout runtime improves by 25% over the previous model.
Runtime and charging figures
| Use or charging measure | Battery life or charge |
|---|---|
| Normal use | Up to 24 hours |
| Low Power Mode | Up to 38 hours |
| Outdoor workout | Up to 10 hours |
| Charging to 80% | About 30 minutes |
| 15 minutes of charging | Up to 12 hours of normal use |
| 5 minutes of charging | Up to 10 hours of sleep tracking |
The normal-use runtime gained from the quarter-hour charge is 50% greater than on the previous model. Charging tests used the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable and an Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter. Actual results vary.
watchOS 27, Siri AI, and iPhone requirements
watchOS 27 becomes available on Monday, September 14, 2026. Series 12 requires iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27 or later, and Apple Intelligence on the watch needs a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby. Siri AI rolls out in beta in English the same day, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish following in October. It is not available to users under 13, will not initially be available in the EU on watchOS, and has daily usage limits, with expanded access available for a fee in the future.
The new Siri app syncs your conversations across devices and lets you pin them. Workout Buddy adds pace, distance, and workout duration insights in English and now Spanish, and works without an iPhone nearby over Wi-Fi or cellular, though it still needs a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and Bluetooth headphones. The Find My app brings devices, people, and items into one map-centric view, and Wallet supports custom passes for any membership or card with a QR code or barcode. A Child Account adds built-in protections, and setting up a watch for a child without an iPhone requires a GPS + Cellular model.
Audio Intelligence features and privacy
Audio Intelligence includes four features: Sound Recognition alerts for sounds like sirens, alarms, and doorbells; Live Rewind, which shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text after a double press of the Digital Crown; Siri Recap summaries of conversations; and faster Shazam. Live Rewind and Siri Recap arrive in beta in late 2026 and require a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, excluding iPhone 16e. Under the Audio Intelligence privacy rules, each feature is opt-in and no audio recordings are created or stored.
Pre-orders and launch availability
Apple Watch Series 12 pre-orders opened on September 9, 2026, with store availability beginning Friday, September 18. Both India and the U.S. are among the announced launch markets. Orders for the new bands also opened September 9, with store availability beginning September 18.
FAQs
What comes in the Apple Watch Series 12 box?
The box contains Apple Watch Series 12, a band, and an Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable (1m).
How should you choose your band size?
Choose your case size and band style first, then measure around your wrist precisely and match it to the band’s stated wrist range; Sport Bands come with one size in the box, so select the band size when ordering. For Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop, use the updated sizing guide even if you have bought one before, because the sizing has changed.
Can you restore an existing Apple Watch backup to Series 12?
Yes. Apple Watch content backs up automatically to its companion iPhone, and an iPhone backup includes that watch data. You can restore the backup when setting up your new watch.
