Farming in Windrose is one of the most valuable long-term systems you can unlock, especially if you’re tired of constantly scavenging for materials. Once you understand how to unlock and craft a Seedbed, you can create a steady supply of food, crafting items, and rare resources without leaving your base.
Here is a quick overview of seedbed farming system in Windrose:
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Unlock Requirement | Defeat Coastal Jungle Boss |
| Key Material | Fertile Soil |
| Seed Source | Wild plants (no vendors) |
| Build Menu | Farming tab (press B) |
| Growth Mechanic | Automatic over time |
| Best Early Crop | Flax |
Finding fertile soil in the foothills ruins
Fertile Soil is the backbone of your entire farming setup, and without it, Seedbeds cannot be crafted. This material is not found near your starting island, so you’ll need to sail to a new biome.
Head southeast to the Foothills region and look for locations marked as “Ancient Farms.” These are ruins scattered across the area that contain small raised dirt patches.

Equip a pickaxe and mine these patches to collect Fertile Soil. Each Seedbed requires multiple units, so it’s smart to gather as much as you can in one trip.
You’ll quickly realize that farming is a mid-game system, not an early-game shortcut.

How to craft and place a Seedbed in Windrose
Step 1
Return to your base after collecting Fertile Soil and open the build menu by pressing B.

Step 2
Navigate to the Farming tab, where all agriculture-related structures are located.
Step 3
Select the Seedbed structure and place it on your base plot using the Fertile Soil you gathered.

Step 4
Ensure the Seedbed is placed on fully exposed ground. If it’s partially covered by terrain like sand, some planting slots may not work properly.
Step 5
Confirm placement and prepare the area for planting.

At this point, your farming system is officially active, but it won’t do anything until you add seeds.
How to get seeds and start planting crops
Unlike many survival games, there is no seed vendor in Windrose. You won’t find a shop selling seeds, and you can’t craft them manually early on.
Seeds are obtained exclusively by harvesting wild plants during exploration. This makes early gathering incredibly important, even before farming unlocks.

Open the build/farming menu again (press B). Select the seed you want to plant from your inventory. Click on an empty slot in your Seedbed to plant it. Wait for the crop to grow automatically over time.
There is no watering or maintenance system, which makes farming extremely low effort once set up.
Crops you can grow in seedbeds
Not every plant works the same way in Windrose, so understanding crop categories is important.
| Crop Type | Examples | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Seedbed Crops | Tomato, Corn, Flax, Bean, Leek | Must use Seedbed |
| Ground Crops | Palm, Ficus, Shrub | Can be placed anywhere |
Flax is especially important early on because it produces fibers used in crafting fabrics and gear upgrades.
Automating farming with Contractor system
Once you reach mid-game, you can take farming to the next level by unlocking the Farming Contractor.
This NPC can be purchased in Tortuga and allows you to automate farming completely—even while offline. You assign seeds and pay a small cost, and after several hours, you receive a full harvest.
This system transforms farming from a manual activity into a passive resource generator.
Unlocking and crafting the Seedbed in Windrose marks a major turning point in your progression. Once you defeat the required boss, gather Fertile Soil, and set up your first farm, you gain access to a renewable system that supports every aspect of gameplay.
If you invest early in farming, you’ll save hours of grinding later and build a much smoother progression path.
