What to know
-
The Collector Leviathan is found by heading straight east from the life pod, staying relatively high in the water column.
-
You must have your bioscanner ready before leaving your Tadpole submersible so you can start scanning immediately.
-
The cleanest way to scan it is to let it grab you and your ship, then exit, lock the scanner on it, jump back in, and dive straight down to break its interest.
-
Once the leviathan releases you and you complete the scan, you can safely run back toward your base or life pod area.
To bio‑scan the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2, you simply need to let it pick you up once and then keep your scanner on it while you are outside your submersible. The encounter is more about positioning and timing than fighting, and the method works reliably if you follow the right approach.

Route and setup
The simplest route to the Collector Leviathan starts at your life pod. From there, you move straight east, keeping your depth relatively shallow; you are more likely to encounter the creature if you stay higher up rather than deep along the bottom. Use your internal coordinates or the pause menu to confirm you are maintaining a roughly eastward heading and not wandering into a different biome.

Before you leave the safety of your pod or base, make sure you have the bioscanner equipped and ready. Draw the scanner before you even get into the Tadpole, so when you need to exit and start scanning, you are not fumbling with your inventory.

Also check that your submersible’s power and oxygen systems are in good shape, since you will briefly need to abandon the vehicle and then re‑enter quickly.
Leviathan encounter details
How to position yourself for the scan
Once you are east of the life pod and in the likely Collector Leviathan zone, slow your movement and watch the horizon. The creature tends to appear in the open water column, so you want enough visibility to see its silhouette against the light. If you dive too close to the seabed, you may miss the encounter entirely or run into other hazards instead.

As soon as you notice it heading toward you, switch to your bioscanner and keep it aimed loosely in the direction of the leviathan. The key point is to be ready before anything starts moving; you do not want to have to swap tools at the last second while it is already closing in.

How to trigger the grab and open the window to scan
Let the Collector Leviathan take the initiative. Instead of trying to dodge or flee on sight, explicitly allow it to come to you and grab both you and the Tadpole submersible. This is the intended safe way to stage the bio‑scan, because the creature holds you for a moment without immediately killing you, giving you a brief window to hop out and scan.

Once it has your ship in its grip and you feel or see the camera lurch, immediately exit the Tadpole while still outside the leviathan’s body.

You do not need to be inside its mouth or tentacles; the moment you are free but still in close proximity and the creature is visible, you can start your bio‑scan. Hold the scanner on it, keeping it in the reticle, and complete the scan before anything else changes.

How to escape safely after the scan
Immediately after you finish the scan, get back into the Tadpole as quickly as possible. The creature will still be nearby and may try to intervene again, so you do not want to linger in the open water.

Once you are inside, dive straight down with the submersible. The Collector Leviathan does not like it when you go directly downward; it tends to lose interest or break contact when you plunge vertically.

After you are clear and the leviathan has stopped chasing, you can level out and head back toward your life pod or base area.
How to handle repeated attempts if you fail
If you attempt the scan but break line of sight or let the creature yank you somewhere before you finish, you can simply re‑approach and try again. The Collector Leviathan will usually remain in its general patrol zone, so you can circle back east from the life pod and wait for another encounter. The same rule applies: keep your scanner out before you get close, let it grab you and your ship, hop out, scan, hop back in, and dive straight down.

Over time, you may learn the exact distance and angle at which the creature becomes alerted, allowing you to set up your approach more precisely. Focus on the pattern of moving east, staying higher, letting it seize you, and then using the downward dive as your escape vector.
Using the method for exploration
Using this approach, you gain the Collector Leviathan’s full bio‑scan quickly and safely, which is important for your PDA and research progression.

Once you have the scan, you can continue exploring the area east of the life pod with more confidence, knowing that you can safely trigger and break the encounter at will. The same corridor and depth band become a reliable hunting ground for future scans or for simply observing the leviathan’s behavior without fear of being caught off‑guard.
