The short version
- You can create a ChatGPT dot in the iPhone or Android app.
- Your dot can start Codex work and follow up on existing threads.
- It can review and change ChatGPT Work automations.
- OpenAI also announced fixes for browsing, notifications, conversations, setup, approvals, and Enterprise access.
You can now create your ChatGPT dot from your phone in the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android, and your dot can start and follow up on work in Codex. OpenAI announced the changes on October 9, 2026, alongside ChatGPT Work automation controls and a batch of fixes.
How do I create a ChatGPT dot on iPhone or Android?
Use the latest ChatGPT mobile app.
- Open dots in the ChatGPT mobile app and follow the introduction.
- Name your dot and customize how it looks, or keep the defaults for now.
- Connect the plugins it needs, or skip that step until later.
You can also set ChatGPT to start on your dot’s chat when you open the app.
A mobile browser cannot be used to create or talk to a dot. At launch on September 29, 2026, setup was available in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. Phone setup is the new option.
What still needs a computer when I set up a ChatGPT dot on my phone?
Connecting your own computer still requires the ChatGPT desktop app, even if you created your dot on a phone. You can make that optional connection during desktop setup or later. It gives your dot access to local files and lets it start and manage local Codex tasks. While the dot uses your computer, that computer must be online with the ChatGPT app open.
Your dot also has a separate cloud computer and can keep working when your device is off. Connecting your computer is for work that needs resources on that computer.
Setup and work by device
| Task | Where you do it |
|---|---|
| Create and personalize a dot | ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app, or desktop browser |
| Connect your own computer | ChatGPT desktop app, during setup or later |
| Use local files or local Codex tasks | A connected computer that is online with the ChatGPT app open |
| Run work on your dot’s cloud computer | Your own computer need not be online |
What can my ChatGPT dot do in Codex now?
Your dot can start Codex work and follow up on existing threads. It can search your ChatGPT conversations and draw on context from Codex threads and automations. The update also improves how it chooses whether to continue a Codex thread or begin another one.
In OpenAI’s October 9, 2026 product demo, a user asks: “Can you spin up three Codex tasks: fix chat scrolling, add keyboard shortcuts, and improve the empty state?” The dot later sends a notification: “All three PRs are up: scrolling, keyboard shortcuts, and the empty state. Ready for your review.”
Delegate work in Codex to your dot.
Your dot can now start work in Codex and follow up on existing threads, drawing on your ChatGPT conversations, Codex threads, and automations. It’s also better at deciding when to keep a thread going or start fresh.

Where delegated tasks run
| Kind of task | What your dot can do | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| New local Work or Codex task | Start work on your computer | A connected computer that stays online with the ChatGPT app open |
| Existing local Codex task | Continue it with new instructions | The connected computer and the task you want it to change |
| New Codex cloud task | Start coding work while your computer is offline | A Codex cloud environment you created first, with its repository and setup configured |
| Task your dot created | Check results and send follow-up instructions | The original computer or cloud environment |
Conversations with your dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Work and Codex apply their normal usage limits to tasks your dot starts or manages.
Can my dot change ChatGPT Work automations?
Yes. Your dot can read and edit ChatGPT Work automations. You can ask what is scheduled or tell it to update a recurring task. OpenAI’s October 9, 2026 post calls these Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work.
What bugs did OpenAI fix in ChatGPT dots?
The October 9, 2026 update groups the fixes into six areas:
- Speed and smoothness: faster cloud browsing and sidebar loading, fewer pauses before replies, smoother transcript scrolling and animations, and a fix for excessive network use.
- Notifications: fewer extra phone alerts while you are already using ChatGPT.
- Web conversations: improved code blocks and attachments, corrected character display in Safari and Firefox, thread names that can change as work changes, and fewer repeated messages announcing a new task.
- Setup: a fix for Outlook setup getting stuck and autofill for email verification codes.
- Review and recovery: clearer plan guidance, a retry option when activity fails to load, steadier web safety banners, and approval buttons no longer clipped or obscured by large Gmail previews.
- Enterprise access: fixes for access on the web and when starting a voice call.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT account had listed most of these fixes on October 6, 2026, a week after dots launched. The October 9, 2026 update also includes the network-use fix, smoother transcript scrolling, self-renaming threads with fewer repeated task messages, and email-code autofill.
And finally, a bunch of small fixes that you’ve been asking for:
• Faster browsing, smoother scrolling
• Fewer unnecessary notifications
• Cleaner code blocks and attachments
• Easier Outlook setup
• Clearer plans and easier retries
• More reliable Enterprise access on web…— ChatGPT (@ChatGPT) October 9, 2026
What did OpenAI say is next for dots?
On October 6, 2026, OpenAI listed these areas for future work:
- More reliable voice conversations.
- More control of the Codex app, including project folders, fuller thread context, thread renaming, and other controls.
- A clearer way to see what a dot is working on.
- Connections to multiple computers.
- Better Windows support for controlling a local computer.
- Further ideas from users.
The October 9, 2026 update adds the ability to use context from existing Codex threads and lets managed threads rename themselves, addressing parts of the earlier Codex list.
Which ChatGPT plans include dots?
Dots are rolling out gradually, so an eligible account may gain access after another account on the same plan.
Plan and access requirements
| Plan | Who can access dots |
|---|---|
| Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 | Users over 18 outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland |
| Business Premium | Rolling out worldwide |
| Enterprise | Rolling out worldwide; off by default until a workspace administrator enables it |
Plan and regional eligibility determine whether dots can appear in your account. Our dots availability guide gives country examples for those rules.
- Update the ChatGPT app on your iPhone or Android phone, then open dots to check whether setup has reached your account.
- Name and customize your dot, and connect the plugins it needs for the work you plan to assign.
- For local files or local Codex work, connect your computer in the desktop app. For cloud coding, create the Codex cloud environment first.
FAQs
Can I create a ChatGPT dot in a mobile browser?
No. Mobile web does not support dots. Use the ChatGPT mobile app on iPhone or Android, the desktop app, or a desktop browser.
Do I need the latest ChatGPT app to create a dot on my phone?
Yes. Mobile setup requires the latest version of the ChatGPT app. Open dots in the app and follow the introduction to name and customize your dot; you can connect plugins during setup or later.
Does my ChatGPT dot need my computer to work in Codex?
For local Codex tasks, yes: your computer must be connected, online, and running the ChatGPT app. For cloud coding, your dot can use a Codex cloud environment that you created and configured first, even while your computer is offline.
Can my ChatGPT dot change Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work?
Yes. Your dot can review and edit ChatGPT Work automations, which OpenAI also calls Scheduled Tasks. Ask it what is scheduled or tell it how to change a recurring task.
Do conversations with my ChatGPT dot count toward usage limits?
Conversations with your dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Work and Codex tasks that your dot starts or manages count toward those products’ usage limits.
Will ChatGPT dots support multiple computers?
OpenAI listed multiple-computer connections as future work on October 6, 2026. The documented connection currently allows one personal computer at a time.
