One phone number can now sit on two iPhones. Apple calls it iPhone Handoff, and it comes with iOS 27.
The short version
- iPhone Handoff lets users with supported carriers switch back and forth between two iPhone models with the same phone number.
- At launch it works with T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom Germany in Germany.
- Apple names the feature with iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo.
What iPhone Handoff does
Both iPhones keep the same phone number. Apple’s phrase is “switch back and forth,” so the move runs in both directions rather than as a one-time transfer. The one condition Apple states is a supported carrier.
Carrier check: pick your carrier to see whether Apple has named it for iPhone Handoff at launch.
Apple lists no setup steps for iPhone Handoff and names no requirement beyond that carrier. iOS 27 arrives as a free software update on Monday, September 14.
Which phones and which carriers
Outside the two launch carriers, Apple has published nothing about iPhone Handoff. It has not said whether other carriers will follow, and the requirement it does state is about the carrier, not the phone.
Apple names two carriers and three models
| Detail | What Apple states |
|---|---|
| Feature | iPhone Handoff, introduced with iOS 27 |
| U.S. carrier at launch | T-Mobile |
| Germany carrier at launch | Telekom Germany |
| Models Apple names it with | iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo |
| iPhone Duo SIM | eSIM only, no physical SIM support |
If one of the two phones is an iPhone Duo, that side is always an eSIM line. Duo is eSIM-only worldwide and is not compatible with physical SIM cards. Apple’s condition for any eSIM is a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan.
How it fits with iPhone Duo
Apple names iPhone Handoff in the iPhone Duo announcement as well as the iPhone 18 Pro one, so a Duo can be one of the two phones. Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone and arrives with iOS 27.1. Apple says its eSIM-only design saves internal space to maximize battery capacity.

Apple’s wording stops at “two iPhone models.” It names no pairing, no primary phone, and no secondary one. Our iPhone Duo hub covers the rest of the foldable.
FAQs
Do both iPhones have to be new?
Apple sets no condition on when either iPhone was bought. If one of them is an iPhone Duo, that phone sets the timing: pre-orders start October 16 and it goes on sale October 23.
Does it work on AT&T or Verizon?
Apple does not name either carrier for iPhone Handoff. Both appear in its eSIM material instead, where eSIM is an industry standard supported by over 500 carriers around the world, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Support for eSIM is not support for iPhone Handoff.
Does iPhone Handoff cost extra?
Apple states no price for it, and it publishes nothing about what a carrier might charge for keeping one number on two devices.
Does iPhone Duo need a physical SIM for this?
No. Duo holds two active eSIMs and stores eight or more, and Apple says eSIM lets you activate service quickly, store more than one plan, and switch between them easily.
