iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. The card in your current iPhone cannot be moved across, so the line has to be activated as an eSIM profile before the phone can use it.

What Apple changed, and why
Apple’s press release describes iPhone Duo as having “an eSIM-only design worldwide that saves internal space to maximize battery capacity.” The product page puts the same point beside the batteries: “an iPhone-first dual-battery system, along with an internal space-saving eSIM design, maximizes physical space for battery capacity.”
The tech specs are where the limit is spelled out. iPhone Duo “uses advanced eSIM technology for more convenience and security (not compatible with physical SIM cards),” and Apple’s case for the switch is that eSIM “offers greater flexibility, better security, and seamless connectivity compared to traditional physical SIM cards.”

iPhone Duo reaches more than 70 countries and regions on October 23, and 28 other countries and regions on October 30. The eSIM rule is the same in all of them.

Apple rates the phone at up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours of typical use with both displays used equally.
Two active eSIMs, eight or more stored
Apple’s spec line is “Dual eSIM (two active eSIMs; stores eight or more eSIMs).” Two active eSIMs means two phone numbers can ring and text on the same phone. The profiles beyond those two stay stored and inactive until you switch to one.
Apple’s FAQ for the phone puts the practical version of that as eSIM letting you “activate service quickly, store more than one plan, and switch between them easily.”
Setting it up
- Confirm your carrier supports eSIM and that your wireless service plan is active. Apple lists both: “Use of an eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan.”
- Get the on-device steps from your carrier. Apple’s eSIM footnote ends with “See your carrier for details.”
Apple’s About eSIM page defines an eSIM as “an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM.”

iPhone Handoff: one number on two iPhones
iOS 27 introduces iPhone Handoff, which “allows users with supported carriers to easily switch back and forth between two iPhone models with the same phone number.” At launch it works with T-Mobile in the U.S. and with Telekom Germany in Germany.
Traveling with iPhone Duo
iPhone Duo carries Apple’s C2 cellular modem, which Apple says “brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability, and now supports mmWave in the U.S.” For what 5G you get in a given country, Apple points to your carrier and to its iPhone cellular page.
Satellite features are included free for two years with the activation of any iPhone 14 or later model, and some of them require a carrier plan. Apple does not offer them on iPhone models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, China mainland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, and says they might not work above 62° latitude.

FAQs
Can I use my current physical SIM in iPhone Duo?
No. In the US the rule already covers the whole recent line, where Apple’s footnote reads: “iPhone 14 models and later are activated with an eSIM and do not support a physical SIM.”
Can I move my number from my old iPhone?
The transfer is a digital one. Apple’s cellular page says every iPhone has eSIM, “an industry-standard technology that lets you activate your new iPhone and add plans digitally.”
Does a second line cost extra?
Apple does not price the plans. The conditions it does state are its own: “Data plan required. 5G is available in select markets and through select carriers.”
What if my carrier does not support eSIM?
Then the line cannot come across, because there is nothing else the phone takes. Apple counts eSIM as an industry standard supported by over 500 carriers around the world, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
Where does the saved internal space go?
Into two batteries. Apple describes “one high-energy battery on each side to maximize capacity while efficiently using internal space,” with “a combination of Apple silicon and energy rebalancing algorithms” allowing them to “operate seamlessly as one.”
