QUICK ANSWER
In NBA 2K27 you unlock Takeovers by leveling the Takeover Progression system through matches to open each of the five discipline categories, then equip an ability in each slot from Progression → Takeover once your attributes meet that ability’s requirement.

NBA 2K27 rebuilds Takeover from the ground up, and the old habit of grinding one bar and popping it no longer applies. There are now five separate Takeovers to unlock, each gated behind a progression level and an attribute requirement, and getting a full loadout online means understanding both gates. Here’s how the whole system fits together and how to equip your first ability.

Five separate Takeovers, five separate meters

Takeover is no longer a single global bar. The system splits into five disciplines — Shooting, Finishing, Playmaking, Defense, and Rebounding — and each one gets its own meter in the HUD that rises and falls in real time based on how you’re playing in that area.

You equip one ability per discipline, so a complete loadout is five abilities working in parallel rather than one shared Takeover. That structure is the mental model to keep as you build: every slot is its own little upgrade path with its own requirement, and you’re filling five of them, not one.

Takeover category Unlock level
Rebounding Level 1
Finishing Level 2
Playmaking Level 3
Defense Level 4
Shooting Level 5

Equipping a Takeover takes two things — enough progression to have unlocked the category, and attributes high enough to meet the ability’s gate — and here’s the on-screen path from a finished match to a slotted ability.

The category unlocks arrive in a fixed order as you level the overall Takeover Progression system, and the first five levels are what open each discipline for custom abilities. The remaining levels — up to 21 total reward tiers — hand out perks rather than categories.

Attribute requirements for specific Takeover abilities

Ability Attribute requirement
Shot Artist (Shooting) 89 Three-Point Shot 89 Mid-Range
Calibrated (Shooting) 85 Three-Point Shot 85 Mid-Range
Navigator (Finishing) 85 Driving Layup
Airspace (Finishing) 87 Driving Dunk AND 75 Vertical

Unlocking a category only opens the slot — the individual specialist abilities inside it each sit behind an attribute gate, and the logic of that gate matters as much as the number. Some are OR gates: Shot Artist opens at either 89 Three-Point or 89 Mid-Range, so a pure mid-range shooter qualifies without ever touching a 3-ball rating. Others are AND gates that demand every listed rating at once — Airspace needs 87 Driving Dunk and 75 Vertical together, and falling short on either one by a single point leaves it locked. Read the chain before you spend upgrades, then build toward whichever ratings actually unlock the ability you want.

The full ability pool isn’t publicly pinned down yet — early builder material listed 19 unlockable abilities while later requirement charts count 24 — but the gates below are the ones with concrete values in the current Season 1 launch build, and these are launch numbers that can move with patches.

QUICK WIN

Open the Abilities Glossary and read the exact gate before you finalize a build — an AND requirement like Airspace’s 87 Driving Dunk plus 75 Vertical won’t unlock if even one of those ratings falls short.

Charging and triggering Takeovers during a match

Watch the top-right of the screen in a game — that’s where the meters live. Every action feeds the matching discipline: jumpers push the Shooting meter, layups and dunks push Finishing, dimes push Playmaking, lockdown defense pushes Defense, and so on. Each meter climbs through six tiers — Frozen, Cold, Neutral, Warm, Hot, and finally Takeover.

Reach that top tier and the equipped ability fires automatically: a “TAKEOVER ABILITY ACTIVATED” banner pops, an on-screen timer counts down the remaining duration, and there’s no button press — a clean break from the old single-meter Takeover. Sloppy play runs it in reverse, though. A string of mistakes cools or freezes the meter and can temporarily drop the attributes it was boosting, so a bad stretch actively costs you. And because the meters are independent, you can drive two or more disciplines into Takeover at once — an enormous stat swing, and a genuinely hard one to pull off.

Takeover Perks that reshape your meters

The progression levels past the five category unlocks — 16 of the 21 total reward tiers — hand out Takeover Perks that change how your meters behave rather than what they do. Accelerator speeds up how fast a meter gains, Longevity stretches how long a triggered Takeover lasts, and Overdrive strengthens the attribute boost while it’s active.

They come in per-discipline flavors — a Shooting Accelerator, a Defense Longevity, a Rebounding Overdrive — and each one slots in alongside the ability for its discipline once progression unlocks it, letting you tune not just which Takeovers you run but how aggressively they build and how long they hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Takeover progression unlocks shared across your MyCareer saves?

Yes. Takeover Progression rewards carry across all of your MyCareer save files, so the levels, categories, and perks you grind out on one player are available to the rest — you don’t restart the unlock climb from scratch on every new build.

What is Hydration Hero and which slot does it go in?

Hydration Hero is a universal Takeover ability that reduces Adrenaline and Stamina drain while you’re in Takeover, functioning as a safety net against gassing out late. Unlike the discipline-specific abilities, it can be slotted into any of the five discipline slots, so you can drop it into whichever category you care least about optimizing.
