While Facebook and its standalone messaging app Messenger have been around for a while, we still keep seeing updates for both. Facebook recently updated its Messenger app with a group calling function, to compete with the likes of Zoom, Google Meet, and others. While the latter tend to be more business-oriented, Facebook’s Messenger Rooms keeps in theme with the company’s social vibe.
But how does Facebook Messenger compare to the other Big Wigs in the market right now? Keeping that in mind, here is all you need to know about Facebook Messenger’s limits to help you better choose your next video conferencing app.
What is Facebook Messenger
Facebook Messenger started out as part of the social media giant’s app ‘Facebook’. In 2010, Messenger became a separate entity with its own standalone app. The app brought with it a number of features like voice and video calling, stickers, and more.
Recently, with social distancing norms enforced, Facebook introduced its solution for group calling. The new feature termed ‘Messenger Rooms’ was added to the existing app and allowed users to create Rooms where people could drop in and out.

Messenger allows you to create groups within the app. This works like any other app, where you choose who you would like to have in your group. The added feature is that you can call all the members of a group directly from the group chat itself.
Facebook Messenger allows up to 250 people in a single group. If you create a call within the group you can only choose 8 people to join in.
Meanwhile Messenger Rooms allows up to 50 people to be on a group call at once. Once the limit is reached, new people cannot join in, until someone leaves the room.
Type of Facebook Service | Maximum number of participants per meeting |
Facebook Messenger | 8 |
Messenger Rooms | 50 |
Facebook Messenger Time Limit
Well, there’s good news on this front. Both Messenger and Messenger Rooms have no time limit on their calls. Both video and audio calls can extend indefinitely, or until everyone leaves the call.
Type of Facebook service | Time limit per session on Facebook Messenger |
Facebook Messenger | Unlimited |
Messenger Rooms | Unlimited |
Facebook Messenger Free limit
Luckily there is no limit in this regard. That’s because both Facebook Messenger and Messenger Rooms only need you to have a Facebook account and absolutely free to use! There are no subscription fees or account types with Facebook.
Facebook Messenger is a fun to use app that is constantly being updated with new features. If you haven’t tried out the AR filters yet, you really must. Add to that virtual backgrounds, quick games, and no time limits, Facebook Messenger looks like it might be the next Houseparty. Have you tried Messenger Rooms yet? What did you think? If you have a business account on Facebook, you can also use Cucomm browser extension (it’s got a free version that I’ve tried) that helps you to send multiple messages or automatically add friends on Facebook. You can choose groups by area or by interest, collect data and create personalized messages. It’s really easy and helpful, ’cause you don’t have to do everything manually.
