- The command works on any plan and with any provider.
The v2.1.281 release notes, dated September 23, add an auto mode recommendation to Claude Code’s existing /insights command. The command analyzes recent sessions on your machine and produces a report about how you work.
How to run /insights
- Run /insights in Claude Code.
Claude Code writes the latest report to ~/.claude/usage-data/report.html.
What the /insights report shows
What you can learn from the report
| Report content | What you can do with it |
|---|---|
| What you work on | Review the work represented in your recent sessions. |
| Friction points, including misunderstood requests and buggy code | Identify where your sessions ran into trouble. |
| Suggestions for using Claude Code more effectively | Consider changes to how you work with Claude Code. |
The auto mode recommendation can appear when auto mode is available in the session and your recent sessions mostly ran without it. Its permission prompt count is an estimate of what auto mode could have handled, not a count of prompts it handled.
Which sessions count and how long reports remain
One run analyzes up to 200 sessions that /insights has not analyzed before. It skips very short sessions and does not include sessions from other devices or claude.ai. If sessions are left out, the header shows the analyzed count alongside the total, for example, 200 sessions (412 total).
Claude Code also saves a timestamped copy of each run in the report directory, preserving earlier reports. At startup, it deletes reports older than the configured cleanupPeriodDays period, which defaults to 30 days.
Availability and token use
You can run /insights on any plan and with any provider. Its analysis uses the same provider and account as your regular sessions, and its tokens count toward your plan or API usage.
What to do now
Run /insights and read the report’s friction points and suggestions. If the auto mode recommendation appears, use its estimate to gauge how many recent permission prompts auto mode could have handled.
