Oppo unveils two unnamed phones: A 5G phone and another with a 48MP lens, 10x lossless optical zoom

Oppo, like any other major smartphone vendor, is in Catalonia attending the Mobile World Congress 2019 tech show. Prior to the official kick-off, the Chinese vendor unleashed two futuristic smartphones that not only aim to be among the first to offer crazy fast internet speeds, but also the first with a 48MP camera that can achieve up to 10x lossless optical zoom.

We already knew Oppo was working on a 5G phone as the company pointed out late year that it had a working 5G prototype based on the Oppo Find X. However, we can’t ascertain whether the said Oppo 5G phone will take the form factor of the Find X.

As you may have guessed, the unnamed Oppo 5G smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset that picks its 5G speeds from the Snapdragon X50 modem.

On the same stage, Oppo also unveiled another unnamed smartphone whose major highlight is a 48MP lens that can manage up to 10x lossless optical zoom. This means that when you zoom in at extreme levels, photos taken by this phone will retain more detail and quality. This feature can be really useful when shooting objects from a distance.

The unnamed Opo phone will ship with a tri-lens camera array on the back featuring a wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. The camera module is said to be 6.76mm thick, allowing the company to use a larger sensor that lets in more light to improve photography in poorly-lit conditions.

Now, for the most important part of this article – will any of these phones make it to the U.S. market? Well, the obvious answer here is no because Oppo hasn’t established itself in North America. As for the features that make up the two handsets – 5G and the 48MP camera with 10x lossless zoom – we can expect them to arrive in the U.S. through Oppo-affiliated devices in the shape of OnePlus.

Yes, Oppo owns OnePlus and usually, most specs and features (and even design) that show up on Oppo flagship phones usually end up on OnePlus phones. That said, we won’t be surprised if a future OnePlus device comes with support for 5G connectivity and another brings over the impressive lossless optical zoom feature.

Apparently, at least four carriers have confirmed to carry the Oppo 5G smartphone when it arrives in Q2 2019, namely Swisscom in Switzerland, Telstra and Optus in Australia, and Singtel in Singapore and China Mobile. The 48MP camera phone is also expected to arrive during the same period.
