Mobdro on Roku

If you haven’t used Mobdro yet, you definitely need to check it out. Mobdro searches the internet for free content and streams it directly to your phone! Mobdro is only available to download for your Android device. But how cool would it be if you could watch that free content on your Roku TV!

What is Mobdro?

Mobdro is a free media streaming service that is built for Android running devices. Mobdro lets you stream free media in exchange for ads played between. The app has a nice selection of content and even categorized it for you to help you choose better. Categories include News, TV Shows, Movies, and more.

Mobdro also has a ‘Download’ option, which is essentially a screen recorder. The app lets you choose how long you would like to record the screen with the video playing (weird or revolutionary?). Mobdro also has some cool features like Sleep Timer (turns off the device automatically when not in use), Live sports, and more.

Most Android devices running Android 4.2 and above have Screen Mirroring inbuilt. Depending on the phone, it may be called something else. For example, Samsung devices have an option called ‘Smart View’ which lets you connect your device to another Miracast enabled device and mirror your screen. Similarly, LG and Huawei also provide their own Smart View-like streaming option, making it super easy to mirror the phone screen to a smart TV and streaming devices like Roku.

What do you need

Before you start off, here is what you need to watch Mobdro content on a Roku device using your native Screen Mirroring.

  • Android device (Android 4.2+) (An easy option for Samsung devices covered below)
  • Mobdro APK (Download Link)

Getting started

The first thing you want to do is download the Mobdro APK on your android phone and install the application. You will need to allow installation from third-party apps if you get prompted.

Next, you want to make sure that both, your Android device and your Roku TV are on the same wireless network.

Enable Screen Mirroring on your Roku device

As mentioned above, Roku has Miracast (Screen Mirroring) built-in. But you need to enable it before you can connect other devices to your TV.

To enable the function, press the ‘Home’ button on your remote and go to ‘Settings’. Now go to System > Screen Mirroring > Screen Mirroring Mode.

Select ‘Prompt’ in the next screen to always receive a prompt when an unknown device tries to mirror their screen onto your TV.

Streaming from your Android device

This is the final step. On your Android device, go to the screen mirroring option and select ‘Cast’. If you have a Samsung device the option is right in the Notification center. Swipe down from the Notification panel to access your quick apps. Now tap on Smart View to turn it on. You can also search for Smart View in the Settings app.

For Huawei devices, it’s called Wireless Projection, and can be found under Settings > More connections > Easy Projection. For other devices, look for the ‘Cast’ option under Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Cast.

Cast option

Your phone will search for other compatible devices on the same wireless network. Select your Roku device from the list.

You will not see a prompt on your TV letting you know that a device wants to mirror their screen. Hit ‘Accept’. You should now see your phone screen mirrored on your Roku TV.
