What is the Nether

The Nether is a new area in Minecraft that is advertised as a completely new dimension consisting of new challenges, items, and creatures. It is filled with fire, lava, fungi, and many hostile creatures. It is not for the faint-hearted and you should be extremely prepared while visiting the Nether dimension in Minecraft, especially if you are playing the Survival mode.

How to access the Nether dimension

The Nether dimension can only be accessed by players if they create a Nether Portal. Nether portals help you transport to and fro from the Nether Dimension. They are made from obsidian and require you to light a fire inside the frame to activate the portal. When using the portal you will be transported to a corresponding portal in the Nether dimension. It takes a total of 4s to transport your avatar to the Nether and you can step out of the frame during these 4 seconds to cancel your transport.

How to create a Nether Portal to access the Nether dimension

It is quite simple to create a Nether Portal in Minecraft. Follow the guide below to help you get started.

Things you will need

  • 9 x Obsidian Blocks (Minimum)
  • Source of fire (Flint & Steel/Fire Charge/Ghast Fireball/Blaze Fireball/natural spread)

Procedure

Start by placing your obsidian blocks in the overworld in a rectangular shape as shown below. The minimum size of your frame should be 4 x 5. The maximum size of your frame can be 23 x 23.

Once you have built your frame, ignite a fire inside it using your desired source of fire as mentioned above. Once ignited, the fire will activate your portal which should start glowing purple indicating that it has been activated.

Tip: The corner blocks of your Nether portal are not necessary. If you are short on Obsidian blocks then you can arrange them as shown in the image below. This also gives you the advantage of obtaining an additional 4 blocks from the existing Nether portal without destroying them.

What kind of creatures can be transported via a Nether portal?

Nether Portals allow most creatures to pass through with some exceptions that have been mentioned below.

  • Withers are not allowed to pass through the Nether Portal
  • Ender Dragons are not allowed to pass through the Nether Portal
  • Entities riding an entity are not allowed through the Nether Portal
  • Entities being ridden are also not allowed through the Nether Portal
