What’s the new Snapchat Music feature all about

With Sounds, Snapchat users will be able to add soundtracks to their Stories and Snaps. Users can create Stories featuring songs in them from a curated catalog of song titles listed under ‘Featured Sounds’. Those who view your story or snap will then be able to swipe up on it to reveal more info about the song and also play them on a music streaming app of their choice.

The Sounds feature is only available for iOS users at the moment and there’s no word on when the feature will roll out on Android.

Snapchat has partnered with Kobalt, Warner Music Group, Merlin, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell Music, BMG Music Publishing, and NMPA to create its list of Featured Sounds and we can only expect this list and song titles to expand in the future.

How to add music to videos on Snapchat

To add music to your Stories on Snapchat, open the Snapchat app on your iPhone and tap on the camera tab at the bottom.

On the camera screen, you will be able to see a bunch of options in the top right corner. Among these options is a Sounds option which will be indicated by a music note icon below the flash icon. Tap on it.

When you open the Sounds feature, a list of songs will pop up and will be labeled as ‘Featured Sounds’.

You will be able to listen to preview any song from this list by tapping on the Play icon adjacent to the song’s name inside Featured Sounds.

To add a song after previewing it, tap on the ‘Next’ button at the bottom to add it to your Story.

To add a song directly from this list to your Story, tap on the track, and the song will automatically load on your camera feed.

When you add a song to Snapchat, you will be able to see the song’s seek bar at the bottom portion of the screen. Tap on the Play icon next to the seek bar to play the track.

You can drag this bar left and right to play the portion of the song track that you wish for others to listen to when viewing your story.

To add the soundtrack to your story, tap on the camera shutter button at the bottom center to capture an image with the featured sound. If you wish to upload a video as your Snapchat story, tap and hold on the shutter button and shoot the video you want to create.

When you have captured your Snapchat story, a new Sounds bubble will now show up on your Stories screen. This bubble will show the song title and artist name which can be moved to any part of your screen by dragging it.

You can now proceed to share it as your story or as a message to any of your contacts by tapping on the ‘Send to’ option at the bottom right corner and then selecting whom you want to share the snap with.

That’s it. Your new Snapchat Story will now be visible to anyone with whom you have shared it with. Viewers will be able to view the album art, song title, and artist name by swiping up on your story. They will also be able to listen to the full song on streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud.

How to get the new Music feature on Snapchat on iOS

To get the new ‘Music feature’ on Snapchat, you should be running the latest version of the Snapchat app on your iPhone. To update your app to the current version of Snapchat, open the App Store on your iPhone and tap on the profile picture on the top right corner.

Under the ‘Upcoming automatic updates’ section, you should be able to spot the Snapchat app for which an update should be available.

I can’t see the music icon on Snapchat. What can I do?

As mentioned above, for the music feature to work on your iPhone, you will need to run the latest version of the Snapchat app on iOS. You can install the latest Snapchat update from the App Store.

Can you search and add the song you want?

No. At the moment, Snapchat doesn’t allow you to search for songs to add manually to your stories. This is quite disappointing since not only did the ability to add music to videos arrive late but Instagram, which has had the feature for some time now, gives its users the option to search for songs they wish to add.

For now, Snapchat has made it clear that its music catalog includes popular tracks from Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Music Group, BMG Music Publishing, Warner Chappell Music, and more.

Although not available currently, you can expect more music and a search option to come to the app soon once the feature becomes popular and widely used.
