What to know

  • Gemini is building dedicated reference-image controls and actions for changing a selected object’s color.
  • Reference-guided image editing is already public; these additions extend the existing editor.
  • Google app 17.73.15 includes reference-image upload messages and an object-specific “Change %1$s color” action.

Gemini already supports reference-guided image editing, which Google announced on August 26, 2025. Our teardown of Google app 17.73.15 found dedicated controls taking shape within its existing editor: options for managing a reference-image attachment and requesting a color change for a selected object.

Reference images get dedicated attachment controls

The editor has new labels for adding and removing a reference image, alongside messages for upload progress and failure. An attachment-type error also explicitly says that this flow accepts only images.

These strings describe the reference attachment from selection through upload and removal:

assistant_robin_sketchy_add_reference_image = "Add reference image"
assistant_robin_sketchy_reference_image_uploading = "Uploading reference image"
assistant_robin_sketchy_reference_image_unsupported_type = "Only images can be attached"
assistant_robin_sketchy_reference_image_error = "Failed to upload reference image"
assistant_robin_sketchy_remove_reference_image = "Remove reference image"

A color-change action names the selected object

The same editor includes “Change color” and the more specific “Change %1$s color.” The latter provides a placeholder for the selected object, giving the color-editing action an object-specific label.

The paired actions appear in these editor strings:

assistant_robin_sketchy_select_change_color = "Change color"
assistant_robin_sketchy_select_recolor_object = "Change %1$s color"

For a targeted recolor, the remaining question is how you choose the replacement color: the labels identify the action, but do not reveal that part of the editing flow.
