What to know

  • Gemini adds code for playback-speed adjustment to its existing response read-aloud feature.
  • Read-aloud is already public; the additions include a speed label alongside explicit Play and Pause labels.
  • Google app 17.71.17 contains all three strings under Gemini’s chat text-to-speech controls.

Gemini is preparing more control over the pace of its spoken answers. Our teardown of Google app 17.71.17 found a playback-speed label alongside Play and Pause strings for chat audio. Together, they point to an update to the assistant’s existing response read-aloud feature, with speed adjustment as the notable addition.

Read-aloud has been in the app’s code since 23 June 2026 or earlier, and the broader capability is already public. Google’s help documentation describes listening to a response through the Listen control. This build’s additions concern the controls attached to that audio.

About APK teardowns — APK teardowns examine an app’s code and resources for features and changes a developer is preparing. These findings can reveal work before it is announced, but unfinished features can change, remain behind server-side flags, or be removed before reaching your phone.

A playback-speed label joins Gemini’s chat audio controls

The additions share the assistant_robin_chat_tts_playback prefix, tying them specifically to playback of Gemini chat text-to-speech. The speed string includes a placeholder, while the other two labels name the actions for playing and pausing the audio:

assistant_robin_chat_tts_playback_speed = "Playback speed %1$s"
assistant_robin_chat_tts_playback_pause = "Pause"
assistant_robin_chat_tts_playback_play = "Play"

“Playback speed %1$s” points to a label that includes a speed value supplied by the app. That is evidence of work on speed adjustment for ordinary spoken responses. The string does not specify the available speeds, the increments between them, or how you would make a selection.

The Play and Pause labels belong to the same set of additions. Pausing and resuming Gemini response audio were already publicly discussed on 19 May 2026, so those actions have an established history. Their appearance here places the speed-related text alongside familiar playback controls in the chat-audio resources.

The distinction also matters when comparing playback features across Gemini: Audio Overview controls concern a different listening surface. These strings specifically name chat text-to-speech, keeping the finding focused on ordinary responses. The resources establish the labels being added, without establishing a rollout of speed selection.

For you, the useful change would be choosing the pace of a spoken Gemini answer, alongside deciding when it plays or pauses. Longer answers would become easier to listen to at a pace that suits you.
