As already pointed out, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite comes preinstalled with Oreo 8.1 and thus is entitled to an update to Android 9 Pie, probably the one and only OS upgrade the device will ever see. As of February 15, owners of this phone can install the beta version of Pie, with the stable version expected somewhere in early Q2 2019.

Of course, the stable Pie update will have MIUI 10 running on top.

  1. I tried both 9.2.15 (beta) and 9.2.21 (beta) on my brand new Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite Global model running MIUI 10.2.2 (Stable) Jan 2019 version, the Local Update method doesn’t work and asks for Fastboot mode flashing, even though according to this Xiaomi Local Update page ( http://en.miui.com/a-232.html ), “Update to Global Beta ROM from Global Stable ROM and vice versa” doesn’t require Unlocking.

So I tried unlocking the bootloader, only to get the 360 hours mandatory delay before I could unlock. Yes it’s a brand new phone and brand new mi account.

So … has anyone successfully applied the Android 9 beta update and through Local Update or Fastboot mode with or without unlocking ?
Are there any workarounds for me ? I really need to upgrade to Android 9 asap so that I could restore my Google Pixel backup (has gone to brick) which was created in Android 9 onto this Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite. Thanks.

  2. Has anyone been able to apply the 9.2.15 (beta) or 9.2.21 (beta) ? Using Local Update or Fastboot mode ? Please advise. Thanks.
