You can buy the entire Heavy Knight (Steel) armor set from the Isolated Merchant in the Weeping Peninsula and the Hefty Scimitar from the Nomadic Merchant north of Fort Haight West in East Limgrave — on any class, at any time, without ever starting as the Heavy Knight.
The Heavy Knight is one of two new starting classes the Tarnished Pack added in Patch 1.17, and its bulky Steel armor and oversized Hefty Scimitar are its signature loadout. You don’t have to reroll a character to wear any of it: the four armor pieces sit with one merchant in the Weeping Peninsula and the weapon with another in East Limgrave, both in the game’s opening regions.

The four armor pieces — the Steel Helm, Steel Armor, Steel Gauntlets and Steel Greaves — all come from a single vendor, the Isolated Merchant at his shack in the Weeping Peninsula. The Hefty Scimitar is stocked separately by a Nomadic Merchant in eastern Limgrave, so completing the look means two short trips rather than one. Rune prices vary slightly from screen to screen, so treat the figures below as approximate.
Don’t kill the Isolated Merchant — if you cut him down on an earlier run, his Steel stock is gone for good on that save, and there’s no second vendor for the armor pieces.
How to get the Hefty Scimitar
Rest at the Fort Haight West Site of Grace
Fast travel to Fort Haight West in the far east of Limgrave — it’s the closest grace to the weapon vendor.
Head north toward the Minor Erdtree
Leave the fort and travel north through the fields toward the small Erdtree that marks the area.
Find the campfire in the woods
A Nomadic Merchant sits at a campfire just short of the tree, and the fire is easy to spot from a distance.
Buy the Hefty Scimitar
Speak with the merchant and purchase the Hefty Scimitar to finish off the Heavy Knight loadout.
Is the Steel set and Hefty Scimitar worth using?
The Steel set is a heavy four-piece with strong physical defense — one of the sturdier looks you can pick up this early if you can carry the weight, and it fits a build that plants its feet and trades hits rather than rolling out of everything. The Hefty Scimitar is a Curved Greatsword with high base damage and decent guarding, but its scaling is split between Strength and Dexterity and sits on the weaker side, so it leans on raw base hit more than on stat scaling.
Key Put together, the pair points squarely at a poise-heavy, stance-break style: soak damage in the steel, swing a big curved blade to stagger foes, and lean on Endurance to keep both online. It won’t out-scale a focused Strength weapon later on, but as an early tank kit that you can grab on any character, it’s a genuinely fun set to grow into.
