Lately, 5G has been all the rage in the smartphone industry, with every other major smartphone vendor and even carriers wanting in on the fun as early as possible. But from the look of things, one Donald Trump isn’t feeling quite settled with what 5G is set to bring forth and instead, the U.S. President wants 6G to arrive ASAP.
“I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster and smarter than the current standard,” Trump tweeted.

“American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind on something that is obviously the future,” he added in another tweet.

While there’s no doubt the President tweeted this in good faith, his statement has been met with divided comments, with some sections completely blowing it out of proportion. Its true 6G is non-existent and could take a decade or so to arrive, but given that 5G is only becoming a thing yet there are already talks of 5G+, it shouldn’t be long before we begin talking about 6G connectivity.
Still, talking about 6G and actually having this technology in use are two different things. If history serves us right, it may take several years to get things going with 5G, after which we can begin thinking about 6G. This could easily mean a wait-time of up to 10 years or even more, but of course, the President seems to be ahead of time.
The U.S. is one of the few markets across the globe that is almost 5G-ready, with devices like Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and LG V50 ThinQ set to begin selling later this year. Heck, even Motorola has a 5G Moto Mod to provide 5G connectivity, suggesting that the market is indeed adjusting to the new tech.
As for Trump and his 6G dreams, there is still a long way to go.
