How to Unlock Tier 5 Tools in RuneScape Dragonwilds: Requirements and Uses

Your Steel Pickaxe and Steel Logging Axe are Tier 5 tool upgrades, expanding which nodes you can mine and chop so you can push farther through the maps. You’ll need to reach Fell Hollow first. The Blast Furnace turns those bars, coal and the fuel pellet into Steel Bars for your tools.

Gather Dragon Wolf drops and prepare Draconic Leather

Your gathering starts in Fellhollow, the purple region toward the top of the map. Get your existing tools ready before heading out.

Dragon Wolves are the dog-like enemies found across Fellhollow. Their drops feed your leather preparation, which starts early and continues when you’re ready for the pickaxe.

Making your first Draconic Leather also unlocks armor recipes, including Green Dragonhide items. There’s an alternative leather recipe at the Tannery: combine 3 Hard Leather with 1 Dragon Blood, provided you have an upgraded Tanner’s kit.

Mine Coal and construct the Blast Furnace

Coal is the progression gate. Mining it for the first time unlocks the Blast Furnace in your build menu, giving you access to the processing station needed for steel. Look for dark Coal Nodes on walls, cliffs, and rocky surfaces in Fellhollow.

Both Iron Ore and Coal occur around Bleakfields Valley. You can gather your iron elsewhere if you already have another location available; you’ll need it for the furnace itself and the bars that follow. Before building, choose a spot that meets the furnace’s placement requirement.

Blast Furnace construction materials

Make Fuel Pellets, Iron Bars, and Steel Bars

The Blast Furnace runs on Fuel Pellets, and interacting with the completed structure opens access to their recipe. You’ll need a supply of pellets alongside your smelting materials to keep steel production going.

Fuel and metal processing recipes

Producing Steel Bars unlocks the Steel Logging Axe recipe, along with the Stonecutter and Spade. Keep your ore, bar, and fuel supplies moving through production until you can cover both tools’ material requirements.

Gather Willow Logs and turn Corpse Cotton into Fine Thread

With steel production underway, your next gathering trip centers on Bleakfields Valley. Willow Trees grow at scattered spots near water pools; look for their drooping appearance, including a blue-glowing tree beside a pond.

Corpse Cotton comes from the small, explosive spore-like balls around and below the valley, with more in the surrounding Fellhollow region. A green-glowing pod marks one gathering spot, and a graveyard area contains additional nodes. Collecting cotton unlocks the Fine Thread recipe.

The logging axe needs the processed thread, so gathering cotton is only part of the job. Leave time for spinning when you return to base.

Craft the Steel Logging Axe and Steel Pickaxe

Check what your Blacksmith’s Bench recipes still need before you finish processing materials for the Steel Logging Axe and Steel Pickaxe. The finishing materials differ. Keep your leather supplies handy while you prepare the thread, then check both recipes with your components ready.

How to progress from Fellhollow materials to both steel tools

You’ll need regional materials, processed steel, and the finishing supplies for both tools before you can craft them at base.

Gather Dragon Wolf drops

Kill Dragon Wolves when you encounter them for their Dragonwolf Hide and Dragon Blood drops.

Prepare Draconic Leather

Back at your base’s Tannery, turn the Dragonwolf Hide you farmed into Draconic Leather.

Gather iron for construction and smelting

This upgrade needs a large iron supply. If you’re short, farm Iron Ore in Fell Hollow or another location where it’s available.

Mine a Coal Node

Next, seek out a Coal Node in Fellhollow and hit it with your pickaxe; your first mined Coal unlocks the Blast Furnace blueprint in the build menu.

Construct the Blast Furnace

Once it’s unlocked, return home and gather its building resources. With those ready, open the build menu, place the Blast Furnace blueprint, and complete construction.

Open the new furnace

Click the completed Blast Furnace. This should give you the Fuel Pellet, and opening its interface unlocks the Fuel Pellet recipe.

Craft a supply of Fuel Pellets

Check the Fuel Pellet ingredients among the Blacksmith’s Bench recipes. Gather what you need to make several pellets for the furnace.

Load the furnace’s fuel slot

Return to the Blast Furnace with your crafted Fuel Pellets and load them into it as fuel.

Smelt and collect Iron Bars

Next, return to the ordinary Furnace and load Iron Ore and charcoal to smelt plenty of Iron Bars. Collect the finished bars in your inventory.

Produce Steel Bars

Put those Iron Bars and your gathered Coal into the fueled Blast Furnace. Start it and let processing finish to produce Steel Bars from the bars, Coal, and Fuel Pellet.

Replenish your metal supplies

Head outside base to mine substantially more Iron Ore for the tools. Back at base, craft additional Iron Bars and Steel Bars for both recipes.

Gather Willow Logs near Bleakfields Valley

Return to Fellhollow (Fell Hollow) and open your map to locate Willow Trees near Bleakfields Valley (Bleakfields valley Valley), then travel there.

Chop the Willow Trees

Fell the Willow Trees with your Iron Logging Axe to collect Willow Logs.

Gather Corpse Cotton from explosive pods

Approach these enemies to attack; ranged weapons can hit them too. Strike an explosive spore pod to break it, then move backward to get its Corpse Cotton.

Continue through the graveyard

Search the graveyard area for more cotton nodes. Collecting them here builds your supply quickly, and you’ll need plenty.

Mark your cotton farming spots

Place a nearby Corpse Cotton marker on your map. Green markers on the full map overlay identify cotton farming locations.

Review the remaining axe materials

With those ingredients gathered, return to the Blacksmith’s Bench and inspect the Steel Logging Axe recipe. You should have nearly everything apart from fine thread.

Spin Corpse Cotton into Fine Thread

Go inside the cabin again to the Spinning Wheel, where you can turn your collected Corpse Cotton into Fine Thread.

Finish the pickaxe’s leather supply

Gather the necessary items before loading the Tannery to produce a large quantity of draconic lever. Make more Draconic Leather there for the pickaxe.

Craft both Tier 5 tools

This preparation should leave you ready for both tools. Next, make the Steel Logging Axe at the Blacksmith’s Bench, followed by the Steel Pickaxe there once its recipe becomes available.
