Apple kicked off its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 today with the announcement of iPadOS 26, marking a significant shift in both design and functionality for iPad users.

The company has moved away from its traditional numbering system, adopting a year-based naming convention that aligns all its operating systems. Instead of iPadOS 19, users will receive iPadOS 26, matching the naming of iOS 26, watchOS 26, and other Apple platforms.

According to the presentation at Apple Park in Cupertino, iPadOS 26 represents the most substantial design overhaul since the introduction of iOS 7. The new interface aims to create a more cohesive experience across all Apple devices, with consistent visual elements and interactions.

Multitasking, long a focus area for iPad power users, receives significant enhancements in this update. The new system makes it easier to run multiple apps simultaneously and switch between them with improved gestures and visual indicators.

Two new Continuity features strengthen the connection between iPad and iPhone. Live Activities from your iPhone can now appear on your iPad, allowing you to monitor real-time information without switching devices. This integration extends to other Apple devices as well, creating a more seamless ecosystem experience.

The company also introduced a new Phone app for iPad, expanding communication capabilities directly from the tablet. This addition addresses a long-standing request from users who wanted more phone functionality on their iPads.

For developers, Apple is reportedly planning an AI-powered coding tool in partnership with Anthropic for a new version of its Xcode programming suite. This tool aims to streamline app development across Apple's platforms.

The WWDC 2025 keynote began at 1 PM ET (10 AM PT) with Apple executives presenting from Apple Park. The conference continues throughout the week with sessions for developers to learn more about implementing these new features.

iPadOS 26 is expected to be available as a developer beta immediately following the conference, with a public release likely coming in the fall of 2025.
