It took Samsung the usual period to start rolling out the latest Android 8.0 Oreo update to the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8. But even after having to wait for months as others enjoyed the goodies of Oreo on their phones, Samsung fans are not a happy group at the moment.
Make no mistake. The update to Android 8.0 Oreo brings with it a good number of features that everyone is definitely enjoying. However, the update also comes with one major problem – it disables the ability to set personalized text tones for users of the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8.
These three are the only ones that have received Oreo over the air while the Galaxy S9 and S9+, which are also affected, have Oreo out of the box. It’s obvious that this change is part of the Oreo update, which means that users of the Galaxy S7, Galaxy A 2017 and a number of Galaxy J 2017 handsets that will soon be receiving Android Oreo OTA will also be affected. The story should be the same for all other Samsung devices that debut with the OS out of the box.
The implication of this weird change is that you cannot assign specific text tones to individual contacts, which is kind of strange and annoying at the same time. This, however, only affects the stock messaging app, meaning that you can bypass this by going for a third-party SMS app.
In fact, we have put together a post on how to set custom SMS notification tone per contact on the Galaxy S9, S8 and Note 8, which you can check out here. As you do that, you can also join other disgruntled Samsung fans in signing a petition to bring back the personalized text tones to Android Oreo via the link below.
