What to know

  • Halo: Campaign Evolved supports a full third-person mode, but it is not enabled by default.
  • You must unlock the Perspective Skull, a collectible gameplay modifier, before you can play in third person.
  • Once unlocked, the Perspective Skull can be toggled before starting a mission, allowing the entire campaign to be played over the shoulder.
  • Third-person mode works across the campaign and co-op, offering a fresh way to experience the remake.

Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces several modern gameplay options while remaining faithful to the original classic. One of the biggest additions is the ability to experience Master Chief’s adventure from a completely different perspective. Instead of the traditional first-person camera that has defined Halo for over two decades, you can now play through the campaign in an over-the-shoulder third-person view.

Unlike many games where camera options are available immediately, Halo: Campaign Evolved ties this feature to an unlockable Skull, making it something you’ll earn during your adventure.

How third-person mode works

Halo: Campaign Evolved remains a first-person shooter by default. The third-person camera is enabled through one of the game’s 42 collectible Skulls, called the Perspective Skull. Like other Skulls, it acts as a gameplay modifier that changes how you experience the campaign.

Once activated, the camera moves behind Master Chief, giving you a full view of your Spartan throughout combat, exploration, and traversal. Halo Studios has shown gameplay from missions like The Silent Cartographer, demonstrating that combat, movement, sprinting, and animations have all been adapted for this viewpoint.

How to unlock third-person mode

At launch, you cannot simply select third-person mode from the settings menu.

Instead, you must locate the Perspective Skull hidden somewhere within the campaign. Halo Studios has confirmed that the Skull is a physical collectible found during gameplay, similar to Skull collectibles from previous Halo titles. However, its exact mission and location have intentionally been kept secret to encourage exploration.

  1. Start playing the Halo: Campaign Evolved campaign normally.
  2. Explore missions thoroughly and search for hidden Skull collectibles.
  3. Locate and collect the Perspective Skull.
  4. Finish the mission so the Skull becomes permanently unlocked.
  5. Before beginning another mission, enable the Perspective Skull from the Skulls modifier menu.
  6. Launch the mission and enjoy the entire level in third-person perspective.

Where is the Perspective Skull?

As of the latest official information, Halo Studios has not revealed the exact location of the Perspective Skull. The developer wants players to discover it naturally after release, and no official walkthrough has been published yet.

Once the community finds it after launch, the location will likely become one of the first secrets documented by players.

What changes in third-person mode?

The gameplay remains fundamentally the same, but your viewpoint changes significantly.

The gameplay demonstrations show that weapon handling, sprinting, melee attacks, and environmental traversal have all been reworked to look natural from behind Master Chief. Shield effects, overshields, and movement animations are also much more noticeable in this perspective.

Can you switch back to first-person?

Yes.

The Perspective Skull functions as an optional gameplay modifier rather than a permanent change. If you prefer the classic Halo experience, disable the Skull before starting a mission and the game returns to its traditional first-person camera.

This flexibility allows players to alternate between perspectives depending on their preference.

Does third-person work in co-op?

Yes.

Halo: Campaign Evolved supports up to four-player online co-op, and the Perspective Skull can be used while playing cooperatively, allowing everyone to experience the campaign from the new viewpoint.

Is third-person available from the beginning?

No.

You must first unlock the Perspective Skull before the feature becomes available. Until then, the campaign is played entirely in first-person, just as in the original Halo.

Third-person mode is one of the headline additions exclusive to Halo: Campaign Evolved. Alongside new missions, additional weapons, expanded movement options, and dozens of collectible Skulls, it gives returning players a fresh way to revisit the original campaign while remaining completely optional for those who prefer the classic experience.
