The short version
- The Codex team pledged one broadly useful improvement or a full reset each day for 28 days.
- The pledge was posted on October 4, 2026, with no end date.

- ChatGPT Work and Codex use a shared allowance on eligible plans.
OpenAI’s Codex team has made a 28-day pledge to people using Codex and ChatGPT Work: each day will bring an improvement or a full reset. The pledge leaves open whether your own usage will be reset, and it does not confirm that any particular improvement is available.
What is OpenAI’s 28-day Codex and ChatGPT Work pledge?
Thibault Sottiaux wrote on X on October 4, 2026: “Over the next 28 days, each day we’ll either ship one thing that is a clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users or ship a full reset. Let the improvements begin.”
In a post about 16 hours earlier, he said the team was “locking in.” He described work on simpler products, more efficient usage, features and models. The 28-day pledge gives no dates for individual releases, list of improvements or eligible plans. It also leaves open whether a possible reset would be saved for users to apply or delivered automatically.
He gave no start or end date. Twenty-eight days from the October 4 post run to October 31 or November 1, depending on whether the day of the post counts.
What does a full Codex reset do, and how do banked, global, and purchased resets differ?
A full banked or purchased reset refreshes the five-hour and weekly Work and Codex allowances that apply to an account and shifts the weekly reset date. An automatic reset refreshes the limits named in its announcement. None increases the plan’s limits. The way a reset reaches you depends on the offer.
Ways a usage reset can arrive
| Reset type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Banked | An eligible user receives a saved reset to apply before it expires. A full banked reset refreshes the applicable windows and shifts the weekly reset date. It stays available if there is no eligible window to refresh. |
| Automatic or global | The limits identified in the announcement refresh without any action from the user. Nothing is saved to apply later. |
| Purchased instant reset | Eligible personal Plus and Pro users may be offered a purchase, depending on their account and billing country. Completed checkout refreshes the five-hour and weekly allowance immediately, even when some usage remains. It cannot be saved. |
After a purchased reset, the new weekly period begins with your next Work or Codex request; the following weekly reset is seven days after that request. A banked reset is a promotion, not money or API credit. Its eligibility and expiration depend on the offer, and an unused one cannot be recovered after expiry. OpenAI’s banked reset guidance describes those conditions.
How do ChatGPT Work and Codex usage limits work together?
Work and Codex draw from the same included allowance on eligible plans. If your plan has both a five-hour window and a weekly window, each needs remaining allowance for you to keep working. Sending your first Work or Codex message after a five-hour window ends starts the next window.
That allowance does not translate into a fixed task count. The model, task, context, reasoning level and speed setting all affect consumption. Cloud tasks may use more than local messages, and choosing another model does not refill the shared pool. GPT-6 Pro in regular Chat has separate message limits; API use is billed separately.
The five-hour Work and Codex cap currently does not apply to Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500. Those tiers still have included allowances. OpenAI’s Work and Codex usage guidance directs users to Settings > Usage for their remaining allowance and reset times.
How many GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna messages can Plus and Standard Business users send?
Plus and Standard Business have identical estimated ranges for local messages in a five-hour window. These are estimates, not guaranteed message counts. A weekly limit can also stop usage before a five-hour window ends.
Estimated local messages per five hours
| Model | Plus and Standard Business |
|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | 5–45 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | 15–160 |
| GPT-6 Sol | 15–150 |
| GPT-6 Luna | 350–3,000 |
Longer tasks, higher reasoning settings and Fast mode can make each request use more of the allowance. Check your account’s remaining balance when deciding how much work you can start.
