OnePlus 3/3T/5 and 5T will get Android 8.1, but will not support Project Treble

OnePlus android 8.1 update

In a recent AMA on the OnePlus Forums, the company answered many of the users questions about the devices and software updates.

OnePlus recently released the Android Oreo update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. And despite some minor bugs, the users are loving the new update on these devices. The company also recently launched the OnePlus 5T, and announced that the OnePlus 5 and 5T would start receiving the Oreo update in Q1 2018.

During the AMA, OnePlus also confirmed that the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T, will all be upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo. Now that’s great news for the customers, as almost all the phones from OnePlus in the past two years are getting the update.

Unfortunately, OnePlus also mentioned that these devices will not support the Project Treble feature of Android Oreo. Project Treble is a super useful feature in Oreo that allows OEMs to provide faster software updates. So, OnePlus will not benefit from this, and will follow a similar update cycle as it currently does.

When asked when will the OnePlus 3 and 3T stop receiving software updates, OnePlus replied that they will do so when they feel like there aren’t any more updates for these devices. So, for now, be grateful knowing that your OnePlus 3/3T smartphones will continue to get updates for some time.
