TWRP recovery 3.0.2-0 is now officially available for the Nvidia Shield portable, thanks to xda user Steel01 who took over as official maintainer of TWRP recovery development for Shield Portable devices.
The recovery build is fully functional, except for the lack of rotation support, because of which you might find it running in sideways.
As for root access, you can simply flash the latest SuperSU zip to your Nvidia Shield Portable via TWRP recovery and get rooted.
Just grab the Shield Portable TWRP 3.0.2-0 build from the download link below and follow the instructions link to install TWRP .img file and flash SuperSU zip to get root access.

- Unlock the bootloader on your Nvidia Shield Portable.
- Install TWRP Recovery via Fastboot.
- (optional) Boot into TWRP recovery and take a full backup from the recovery options.
- Flash SuperSU zip and get root access.
