Nokia 4: Rumors, Specs, Release date and more

HMD Global has so far unveiled the Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, Nokia 7 and Nokia 8 and soon we’ll get to see the Nokia 1 and Nokia 9. Conspicuously missing from the list is the Nokia 4, but it appears this won’t be for long.

At last year’s MWC, HMD announced the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 and in between them, the Nokia 4 was missing. At the time, the obvious explanation was because of the fear of the number 4 in China, where Nokia has had an amazing start to life in the Android world.

The fear of the number 4

  • The number 4 is “evil” in some parts of Asia, including China.
  • Nokia 4 won’t be sold in China and co.

Chinese OEMs are known for avoiding the use of the number 4 in their dealings and since HMD has been doing a lot of business in China and Asia in general, it was assumed that it’ll probably never release a Nokia 4.

Of course, nothing has suddenly changed about the Tetraphobia in the region. However, it is reported that the Finnish company is working on a new Nokia 4 handset. Unfortunately, this phone is not meant to complete the portfolio of Nokia phones from Nokia 1 to Nokia 9, rather, sources say this will be a replacement or successor to the Nokia 3.

Since the Nokia 3, or even Nokia 5 for that matter, was never sold in China, it makes sense to see HMD turning to Nokia 4 as its replacement without any worries. If anything, it seems the Nokia 4 won’t be sold in China, just like its predecessor, though it remains to be seen what will happen in other Asian markets with the fear of four.

Nokia 4 specs and features

  • No dramatic design changes expected over the Nokia 3
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 on the cards
  • Could be an Android One device, like the Nokia 7 Plus.

As a successor to the Nokia 3, we don’t expect any drastic changes to the design, specs and features of the Nokia 4 compared to its predecessor. While there isn’t much we can share with you, the same rumor about the new phone says that from now henceforth, all Nokia phones will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets.

It’s possible that the Snapdragon 450 might be on the cards alongside 2/3/4GB RAM and perhaps 16/32/64GB storage options. This is based on the fact that the Nokia 6 2018 has now moved a notch higher into the Snapdragon 600 series, leaving the Snapdragon 400 series free. Since the Nokia 6 already rocks a 5.5-inch screen, it’s plausible to expect the Nokia 4 to stick to the same 5.0-inch HD screen used on the Nokia 3.

Nokia 6 2018 Oreo

Of course, Android Oreo should run the show out of the box and even though HMD has already rolled out Android 8.1 Oreo to the Nokia 8, it’s likely that the upcoming Nokia 4 and co will be based on the original version 8.0 of Oreo.

Even more interesting is the notion that the Nokia 4 could join the Nokia 7 Plus in Google’s Android One program, but this is just a speculation.

Nokia 4 price and release date

  • MWC 2018 launch touted
  • Price may range between €150 and €200

Similar to the specs, we don’t know much about the price and release date of the Nokia 4. What we do know, however, is that the phone may be launched alongside other Nokia phones at the upcoming MWC 2018 event. This has further been backed by a tip sent to NokiaPowerUser, suggesting that the phone will be at the event.

Since it’ll occupy the spot just below the Nokia 5 and above the Nokia 2, we expect the Nokia 4 to come in priced somewhere in the regions of between €150 and €200.
