Mortal Shell II has plenty of serious combat mechanics, hidden paths, unusual items, and secrets, but the Sheephead Totem is one of the game’s more memorable discoveries. Instead of giving you another weapon or combat upgrade, it lets you take on the form of a sheep. The transformation is largely a fun optional feature, but finding it also requires you to navigate a specific section of the early world and deal with a cage containing a Grisha Pup.
The route begins at Widow’s Overlook and eventually takes you through Mushroom Village to a Grisha Hunter camp. The key part of the process is making sure you obtain the Cage Key and use it on the correct cage. Community reports from the open beta also confirmed that the Grisha Pup could sometimes fail to appear because of a known bug, so there are a couple of things to keep in mind if the cage does not behave as expected.

Where to find the Grisha Pup and Cage Key
The Grisha camp is located close to the second beacon encountered after traveling through Mushroom Village. From Widow’s Overlook, follow the main route until you reach the wooden paths leading through the village. Once you reach the second beacon, turn left and follow the flower-lined route underneath the wooden arch. This leads toward the Hunter camp where the caged Grisha Pup can be found.

The Cage Key situation has been a little confusing because the open beta had a known issue involving the camp, its NPCs, and the pup. A developer acknowledged reports that the cage could initially appear empty and recommended entering the nearby dungeon and returning so the camp could reload with the Grisha Pup present. The developers also included fixes targeting disappearing Grisha Hunters and the Grisha Pup during the beta testing period.
How to get the Sheephead Totem and become a sheep
The following route keeps the process straightforward and follows the path shown in the guide.
Step 1 – Start at Widow’s Overlook
Start at the Widow’s Overlook beacon, which is the first beacon you encounter in this section of the world. Follow the main dirt path forward rather than taking any of the smaller side routes. Continue until the path brings you toward Mushroom Village.
Step 2 – Get to Mushroom Village
Travel through Mushroom Village using the wooden plank paths. Keep progressing through the settlement and toward the next beacon. You do not need to search the entire village for the Sheephead Totem because the important location is beyond the second beacon.

Step 3 – Take left from Mushroom Village beacon
When you reach the second beacon, turn left. Look for the path covered with white flowers and continue beneath the wooden archway. This turn is important because taking the wrong route can send you deeper into the surrounding area without reaching the Grisha camp.

Step 4 – Grisha Hunter Camp combat
Continue along the path until you reach the Grisha Hunter camp. You should find several hostile Hunters in the area and a large wooden cage nearby. The Grisha Pup is associated with this cage.

Before interacting with the cage, clear the Hunters around the camp. This makes the next part considerably safer and prevents an ongoing fight from interfering with your interaction with the pup.
Step 5 – Collect Cage Key
Once the enemies are dealt with, search the camp for the Cage Key. In the route shown in the guide, the key can be collected around the wooden dining table near the campfire.

If the cage is empty or the expected NPCs are missing, leave the area and return, or enter the nearby dungeon and come back to reload the camp.
Step 6 – Unlock the Cage
Take the Cage Key to the large wooden cage and unlock it. Once the Grisha Pup is inside and the cage can be interacted with normally, approach the animal and select the interaction to examine it.

Step 7 – Unlock the Sheephead Totem
After examining the Grisha Pup, you will receive the Sheephead Totem. Open your inventory and place the totem into an active item or quick-use slot.

Step 8 – Become a sheep
Activate the Sheephead Totem from the assigned slot and your character will transform into a sheep. This is the payoff for the entire detour and one of the game’s more unusual secrets. The ability to play as a sheep was also highlighted during Mortal Shell II’s gameplay reveal, where the transformation became one of the game’s more unexpected features.

What to do if the Grisha Pup is missing
If you arrive at the camp and find an empty cage, do not immediately assume that you have missed an item. The open beta had a documented Grisha camp bug in which the Hunters and pup could disappear or fail to spawn correctly. A developer specifically recommended entering the dungeon next to the Grisha camp and then returning to the area, which could cause the camp and pup to reload correctly.

Players also reported that resting at a beacon could cause the NPCs and pup to reappear. The beta received additional fixes aimed at the disappearing Grisha Hunters and Grisha Pup, so this behavior should be treated primarily as a troubleshooting consideration rather than an intentional requirement of the Sheephead Totem route.
It is also worth remembering that the Cage Key is not the same thing as the main Mushroom Village key. The latter is associated with unlocking the large wooden doors in the Hunter area and provides access to other content, while the cage has its own key and reward.
Why the Sheephead Totem is worth finding

The Sheephead Totem is not essential for completing the main progression, but it is exactly the kind of optional secret that makes exploring Mortal Shell II worthwhile. The route is relatively short once you know where to turn, and the reward is unusual enough to make the detour memorable.
If you want to collect the game’s stranger secrets, make sure you check the Grisha camp near the second beacon, obtain the Cage Key, and interact with the pup rather than simply passing the cage by. Once the Sheephead Totem is in your inventory, you can activate it whenever you want to experience the game’s deliberately ridiculous sheep transformation.
