Key There is no puzzle gate or hidden switch here — the only requirement is finishing the cleanse so the back section of the beacon becomes reachable. Once you have the stone, it slots straight into a Sidearm’s Tarstone slot.

Once Franz has it, the Tarforge unlocks upgrading for all of your Tarstones, not just the Frostshard Stone — so it is a one-time step that pays off across your whole collection.
After that, leveling the Frostshard Stone specifically still has two costs: the Tarstone needs enough experience built up before it can be upgraded, and you spend coins for each level. So a stone you actually use will climb faster than one sitting untouched in your loadout.

Is the Frostshard Stone required for the Stoned trophy or achievement?
No. The Stoned trophy and achievement asks for 73 of the game’s 75 Tarstones, so you can skip a couple and still earn it — the Frostshard Stone is not a mandatory one. It is also not missable: none of the Tarstones lock out, and you can still collect them all after the final boss in free-roam before you commit to New Game+. Upgrading a Tarstone is never required for Stoned either, only obtaining it.
Is the Frostshard Stone worth getting and upgrading?
It is worth it if you lean on a Sidearm. Frost is strong pressure against slower, heavier enemies, and once the stone is fully upgraded the infusion becomes permanent — meaning your Sidearm just fires Frost shots without you ever paying the 20 Resolve again, which frees that Resolve up for other actions. If you rarely draw your Sidearm it is lower priority, but for a Sidearm-focused build it is one of the better Infusion stones to sink upgrade materials into.
