The Forgotten Crossbow is one of the sidearms you can discover while exploring the interconnected world of Mortal Shell II. Unlike weapons that are simply sitting in an obvious chest, this one requires you to enter a dungeon, descend into its lower levels, locate a hidden key, and then backtrack to a locked door. The weapon is also confirmed among the game’s available sidearms by current community guides.

Mortal Shell II puts considerable emphasis on exploration, with more than 60 dungeons spread throughout its compact interconnected world. That makes weapons such as the Forgotten Crossbow part of the game’s exploration loop rather than straightforward progression rewards.

How to reach the Forgotten Crossbow in Mortal Shell 2

The first thing you need to do is reach the appropriate circular area in Widow’s Overlook. Look for the section where enemies are gathered around the area and clear them if necessary. Your objective is to reach the upper portion of the area, where you can find a strange mirror-like portal.

This portal is easy to overlook because it does not initially look like a conventional dungeon entrance. Walk through the mirror and it will activate the entrance to the tomb-like dungeon.

Once inside, you are committed to a fairly large underground exploration section. If your only goal is the Forgotten Crossbow, there is little reason to spend time defeating every enemy you encounter. The dungeon contains plenty of hostile creatures, but most can be avoided by sprinting through the corridors and concentrating on reaching the lower levels.

How to find the Damp Key in the flooded village

Step 1 — Enter the dungeon through the mirror

From Widow’s Overlook, reach the circular area and make your way up the stairs. Deal with the enemies around the entrance if they are blocking your route, then interact with the mirror portal at the top.

Walk through the portal to activate the tomb entrance and enter the dungeon containing the Forgotten Crossbow.

Step 2 — Descend through the dungeon

Continue deeper into the dungeon until you reach the elevator sections. You will need to descend using two elevators to reach the lower part of the area.

The dungeon is fairly expansive, so don’t worry if the route initially feels confusing. Keep prioritizing paths that take you farther downward.

You can fight your way through the enemies, but sprinting is generally the quicker option if you’re specifically following this weapon guide. Mortal Shell II is designed around fast, unrestricted movement, with stamina management removed from its combat system, so making a run through dangerous areas is a viable approach.

Step 3 — Get the Damp Key from Flooded Village

After descending through the dungeon, continue toward the lowest section. Eventually, you’ll arrive at a flooded village area.

This is the important part of the route. The Damp Key isn’t positioned prominently in the middle of the area. Instead, it is tucked into a corner toward the back of the flooded village.

Explore the rear portion carefully and look around the edges rather than simply following the main path. Once you spot the Damp Key, pick it up and prepare to backtrack.

Step 4 — Return toward the dungeon entrance

With the Damp Key in your inventory, retrace your route back upward.

You don’t need to completely clear the dungeon on the return trip. If you’ve already established where the elevators and major pathways are, running past enemies can save considerable time.

Your destination is the locked door near the beginning of the descent. This is the door that you couldn’t open when you first passed through the area.

Step 5 — Use the Damp Key on the locked door

Interact with the locked door once you reach it. Because you have collected the Damp Key from the flooded village, you can now unlock it.

Inside is the Forgotten Crossbow.

Pick it up to add the sidearm to your inventory. The weapon replaces the first sidearm slot and is one of the ranged options available for experimentation as you build your character. Current community listings also place the Forgotten Crossbow alongside other sidearms such as the Naylshotte, Troubadour’s Lute, Salvaged Trebuchaxe and Ballistazooka.

Why the Forgotten Crossbow is worth getting early

The Forgotten Crossbow is particularly useful if you want to expand your combat options beyond straightforward melee attacks. Mortal Shell II places greater emphasis on sidearms and weapon upgrades than its predecessor, with the official game description specifically highlighting powerful sidearms as part of its combat system.

The game also removes stamina gauges, allowing you to move, dodge and attack more freely than in many traditional Soulslikes. That makes ranged attacks a useful complement to aggressive melee play, particularly when you want to create distance or deal with an enemy before committing to close combat.

The weapon is also part of a broader collection of sidearms scattered throughout the game. Current community documentation lists eight sidearms, including the Forgotten Crossbow, meaning this isn’t an isolated optional weapon but one piece of a larger exploration-focused arsenal.

What to do after collecting the Forgotten Crossbow

Once you’ve opened the locked room and collected the weapon, you have two sensible choices. If you’re focused on progressing through the story, simply leave the dungeon and continue exploring the world. The crossbow is now safely added to your arsenal.

If you’re trying to build up Gloom, however, this is a good time to turn around and clear the dungeon. The enemies and destructible objects in the area can provide a useful amount of Gloom, with the supplied walkthrough estimating approximately 5,000–10,000 Gloom from a thorough cleanup.

That makes the Forgotten Crossbow route particularly efficient: your initial run gets you the weapon, while the return trip can turn the same dungeon into a resource-farming opportunity.
