Only Leech Bait works on Island 2 because the Giant Piranha is that island’s boss, and its bait comes from the forest lady’s leech quest — not from any lure you buy in the shop.
How to Fish, the physics-based co-op fishing-and-shooting game from Dazed Games on Steam, gates each island behind a boss, and every island boss has one specific bait that hooks it. On the second island that bait is Leech Bait, and it exists for exactly one purpose: pulling up the Giant Piranha. Everything else you can throw on your rod — hot dogs, beer cans, the lures on the shop counter — belongs to other systems, which is why it feels like nothing but that one bait does anything here.
Why shop lures don’t unlock Island 2’s boss
The game runs two separate bait systems, and they’re easy to confuse. Ordinary baits like the hot dog change what kind of fish you catch and roll a chance at random encounters, while the lures sold in shops summon mini-bosses — optional fights that exist for money and achievements, not island progression. Neither one touches the actual island boss.
Key Island bosses sit on their own track. Each island hands you its boss bait as the reward for a quest, and that bait cannot be bought anywhere. On Island 2 the quest belongs to the lady in the forest, and the bait she gives you is Leech Bait. Cast anything else and the Giant Piranha simply never spawns, so the island won’t move forward no matter how many lures you burn through.
The quest isn’t done when the piranha dies — carry its tail back to the forest lady. That final handoff is the step people forget, and it’s what actually completes the island.

Getting the Leech Bait from the forest lady
The route is short, and it starts on the ground rather than at a shop.
Find three leeches in the forest
They sit on the ground in the grass — sweep the area and grab all three.
Hand the leeches to the lady
She takes them and gives you the Leech Bait in return.
Fish up the Giant Piranha

Bait your rod with the Leech Bait and cast to hook the island boss.
Finishing the Giant Piranha fight and the dinner handoff
Hooking the boss only starts the fight. The Giant Piranha doesn’t stun you, so treat it like a kiting fight — keep moving, lead it, and answer the trash it spawns without blowing yourself up.
Kill the Giant Piranha
Use the shotgun, dodge, and lead it around the arena — it never stuns, so don’t wait for an opening.
Deal with the smaller piranhas
It vomits little piranhas as the fight drags on; switch to your brass knuckles and punch them, since they’re awkward to shoot. Skip explosives — the self-damage isn’t worth it.
Collect the tail it drops
The boss leaves a tail behind; the tail is the dinner.
Bring the tail back to the lady
Returning it to the forest lady is what pops Dinnertime and clears the island.
Leech Bait versus the Beginner Boss Lure
| Bait or lure | Use |
|---|---|
| Leech Bait | Catches the Giant Piranha, Island 2’s boss — required to progress. |
| Beginner Boss Lure | Summons an optional mini-boss; not needed for Island 2, useful for achievements later. |
Island 2’s shop also sells the Beginner Boss Lure, and that’s usually where the mix-up starts. It’s the cheapest mini-boss summon in the game, but it summons an optional mini-boss that has nothing to do with reaching Island 3. Grab one if you want — it’s handy for a pair of achievements down the line — but it will never stand in for Leech Bait.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy the Island 2 boss bait?
No. Island boss baits are never sold — every island produces its own through a quest, and Island 2’s comes from the forest lady after you bring her three leeches. The only lures on the shop shelf are for mini-bosses.
Is the Beginner Boss Lure required for the Giant Piranha?
No. The Beginner Boss Lure only summons an optional mini-boss. It’s worth keeping one for the Yummy in my tummy and Competitive eating achievements later, but it plays no part in beating the island boss or advancing to Island 3.
Where should you look for the three leeches?
On the ground in the forest, hidden in the grass. Island 2 is the only island with grass tall enough to bury loot, so watch for the pickup prompt to appear rather than trying to spot the leech models — walk the area and grab each one as the prompt pops.
