Huawei is at the IFA 2018 and besides letting go of its plans in regards to Android 9 Pie update, the Chinese company has also released its new smartphone flagship processor, the Kirin 980. This is the chipset that succeeds the Kirin 970 found in the likes of Huawei Mate 10 and P20 devices and will power the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 and the successor to the P20.
On stage, Huawei was kin to show how powerful the Kirin 980 is in comparison to its closest competitor, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset. This is obviously what consumers want to know about the chipset as they ponder on which device to buy and from the look of things, it seems the world’s first 7nm smartphone processor has quite a lot up its sleeve.

In terms of CPU performance, Huawei says the Kirin 980 is 37% more powerful than the SDM845 and even better is that it does this with a power efficiency of 32% higher.
When it comes to gaming, you’ll enjoy 22% better performance and 32% power efficiency when compared to the 845.
When compared to the outgoing Kirin 970, the Kirin 980, which also happens to be the world’s first with a Cortex-A76 CPU, delivers 75% improved performance and 58% better power efficiency.
The company also notes that phones powered by the Kirin 980 will be able to achieve LTE download speeds of up to 1.4Gbps, but of course, this will depend on whether your carrier can be able to provide such speeds.
Usually, the Mate lineup is the one to debut a new Kirin chipset, but this year, Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor and the Honor Magic 2, took the honor of giving us the Kirin 980 chipset for the first time.
