Huawei has a bunch of confusing names and devices. For instance, there’s the Huawei P9 Lite and then there’s the Huawei P9 Lite 2017. The former came out in 2016 and the latter, which also goes by the name Huawei P8 Lite 2017, Huawei GR3 2017, or Honor 8 Lite came out in 2017.

Well, there’s a new update for the 2016 variant that has model number VNS-L21, which comes with new features, optimizations and bug fixes as well as the latest Android security patch for the month of July 2018, all as part of build C10B399.

One of the best additions is the support for three-finger gesture for capturing a screenshot. By swiping three fingers down the screen, you’ll be able to capture a screenshot. Huawei says this update also reduces the Phone Manager’s cleanup time to below one minute and adds more scenarios to support the one-touch split-screen feature.

After the update, you’ll notice a new button in the Recent apps cards that when touched, the screen will be split, however, this feature is limited to apps that are currently supported in split-screen mode. For those wary of their data usage patterns, the latest update also optimizes data usage management by letting users specify the start date of their data plan.

The update further optimizes quick calling by enabling the speaker mode by default. To enable this feature, press and hold the volume down button and that’s it. If you happen to delete photos in third-party apps, you’ll be able to restore them via the Recently deleted folder. Also, this update optimizes the screen recording feature by removing time limits.

It’s an OTA update that will take time to hit all Huawei P9 Lite devices out there, so don’t worry if it hasn’t arrived yet. You can wait for the download notification, but you can also try forcing the update via the device’s Settings menu.
