For a while now, the talk has been that there’s a Huawei Honor 8 Oreo update in the works. Up to now, the likes of Huawei Honor 9, Honor V9, and Honor 8 Pro have already received the Oreo treat, which is why it’s normal for Honor 8 users to start asking questions.
The desire to know the status of Huawei Honor 8 Oreo update pushed one concerned user to ask Honor India if and when this will be happening. To their disbelief, Honor India, through its official Twitter handle, confirmed that the device won’t be receiving Android Oreo.
Many are for sure asking, but why? Considering the great piece of hardware this is, the least would have been to give it Oreo. It’s, in fact, more interesting that the Honor 7X will get an update to Android Oreo yet the same isn’t true for a more powerful device in the same lineup. But according to the company, the Honor 8 won’t get the Oreo treat because of “hardware and software limitations.”

There’s nothing specific in this answer, but that’s just how shallow support reps can get with such information. This will no doubt cut some disappointed faces among the mostly happy Honor 8 camp since there won’t be anything past their current Nougat.
Apparently, Honor has also confirmed that the Honor 9 Lite (also known as Honor 9 Youth Edition) will ship with Oreo out of the box and the likes of Honor 9i (also known as Huawei Mate 10 Lite, Huawei G10, Huawei Maimang 6 or Huawei Nova 2i in other markets) and Honor 8 Lite will also get an update to Oreo, although there are no dates.
It’s interesting that the Honor 8 Lite, otherwise known as Huawei P9 Lite 2017, has weaker specs compared to the Honor 8, but it’ll still be getting Oreo. If we were to stick with the vague Honor India explanation, the specs of Honor 8 would favor it for an Oreo upgrade over those of the Honor 8 Lite.
Coming to the software side of the explanation, however, twists the story. Perhaps it would have made sense if Honor went bold and said it only planned one major OS upgrade for the Honor 8. The phone came preinstalled with Marshmallow and has since been updated to Nougat, which should actually be appreciated. On the other side, the Honor 8 Lite has Nougat out of the box and hence it’s only getting its first and probably last OS upgrade.
