As expected, Verizon has officially announced the HTC Droid DNA at its press event, the 5-inch 1080p display toting HTC smartphone that has everyone drooling in anticipation thanks to its appearance in multiple leaks and rumors.
The 1080p display is a Super LCD3 unit, and if the Super LCD2 in the One X is anything to go by, the Droid DNA’s display should be just as stunning (though whether it sways Super AMOLED lovers like me is a question for another discussion). Keeping things running smoothly at the high 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution is the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor running at 1.5GHz, coupled with the blazing fast Adreno 320 GPU, both of which are found in the LG Optimus G and Nexus 4 as well.
The rest of the specs of the Droid DNA are impressive as well, with 2GB RAM, 8 megapixel rear camera and 88-degree ultra wide-angle 2.1MP front-facing camera, both capable of capturing 1080p videos, NFC, Beats audio, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sense 4+ UI.
However, the storage is a measly 16GB and is non-expandable, while the battery is also a lowly 2020 mAh unit, and I wonder how it is going to keep up with such a high resolution display, specially considering HTC’s poor track record at battery life. That limited storage is also a cause for concern, so I hope there are higher storage variants coming later.
With a display that currently has no rival when it comes to pixel density and sharpness, and overall powerful internals, the HTC Droid DNA is a very impressive device, though as earlier mentioned, that low storage and battery capacity might put some people off and drive them towards devices like HTC’s own One X+ or Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 (which also has the S Pen to flaunt, but might be a bit too big at 5.5″).
The HTC Droid DNA will be available for purchase from November 21st, for a price of $199 on a 2-year contract, while Verizon will also hold a live unboxing Hangout event on Google+ on November 19th. Not at all bad for a smartphone of this caliber.
