To unlock the Gill Tube and Marine Workbench in Grounded 2, get the Clipper, cut Eelgrass in the southern Skunk Pond area near Ranger Outpost: Gnarly Bark, then analyze the Eelgrass Strand at a Resource Analyzer.
To get both early underwater unlocks from the Into the Abyss update, you only need one Eelgrass Strand. The Gill Tube rebreather and Marine Workbench crafting station unlock from the same Resource Analyzer scan, so the route is simple: grab the Clipper, cut Eelgrass in Skunk Pond, then scan the Strand.
Both recipes come from one Eelgrass scan
| Unlock | How to get it |
|---|---|
| Gill Tube | Analyze an Eelgrass Strand at a Resource Analyzer |
| Marine Workbench | Analyze an Eelgrass Strand at a Resource Analyzer |
Key The Gill Tube and the Marine Workbench both come from a single material: the Eelgrass Strand. Cut one in the pond, carry it to a Resource Analyzer, and the scan deciphers both recipes together. There is no separate quest or second material for either unlock. The Eelgrass Strand is the only item you need to start both recipes.
How to unlock the Gill Tube and Marine Workbench in Grounded 2
Grab the Clipper, cut a single Eelgrass Strand in the southern pond, and scan it to unlock both recipes.
STEP 1/6
Open the map and head to Skunk Pond

Skunk Pond is the southern water biome beside the Ranger Outpost: Gnarly Bark waypoint.
STEP 2/6
Unlock the Clipper at a Ranger Outpost

Pick up the new Clipper tool from a Ranger Outpost. It is the only tool that can cut Eelgrass.
STEP 3/6
Dive into the pond

Drop into the water and swim toward the tall green Eelgrass growing near the surface.
STEP 4/6
Cut the Eelgrass near the surface

Use the Clipper on the strand closest to the surface and grab the Eelgrass Strand quickly.
STEP 5/6
Surface and find a Resource Analyzer

Climb out of the water and head straight to a Resource Analyzer.
STEP 6/6
Analyze the Eelgrass Strand

Scan the Strand to decipher the Gill Tube and Marine Workbench recipes at once.
Your oxygen only lasts about 40 seconds before you own the Gill Tube, so cut the surface-level Eelgrass and resurface immediately instead of exploring deeper on the same dive.

If the Eelgrass won’t harvest

If you dive down and can’t interact with the Eelgrass at all, you need the Clipper. It is the one tool that harvests Eelgrass, and without it the plant will not respond no matter how close you get. Unlock the Clipper at a Ranger Outpost, then return to the pond and cut the surface-level strand.
Why older Grounded Guide Tube guides don’t apply
Into the Abyss rebuilt Grounded 2’s underwater systems, so many Gill Tube guides are for the original Grounded, not Grounded 2. Old pond-lab routes, material costs and stat values belong to a different game, and the update overhauled traversal and combat below the surface.
Key The Grounded 2 unlock method is simple: cut Eelgrass, then analyze the Strand. Use older crafting-cost lists as reference for the first Grounded, then check the in-game Grounded 2 recipe after you unlock it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does analyzing the Eelgrass Strand unlock anything else?
Yes. Alongside the Gill Tube and Marine Workbench, the same scan also deciphers the Buoyant Marker recipe, so all three land on the new-recipes screen from that one analysis.
Can you use the original Grounded Guide Tube recipe in Grounded 2?
Don’t count on it. The first game’s Gill Tube used Lilypad Wax, Eelgrass Strand and Silk Rope, but Grounded 2’s Into the Abyss update reworked underwater crafting. Unlock the recipe from the Eelgrass Strand scan and read the in-game requirements instead of relying on the old numbers.
