After struggling with TouchWiz for a number of years, Samsung unveiled a UI that is as refined as it is useful. The One UI made its debut with Android 9 Pie last year and has been getting better since. The South Korean OEM is determined to make One UI one of the best custom Android skins on the market, and the company believes user-friendliness is a crucial deciding factor.

Samsung encourages its customers to make use of the Bixby Assistant, which is bundled in with all Samsung Galaxy smartphones. But for countless reasons, most choose to keep their faith in the Google Assistant. It’s must have been a difficult pill to swallow for Samsung, but they did incorporate Google Assistant into One UI.

If you’re using the traditional three-button navigation, holding the Home button will do the trick. Gesture navigation users, on the other hand, need to swipe up and hold to call on Google’s reliable Assistant.

While the latter is undoubtedly a useful feature, many users find it a bit intrusive. If you fall in that category, we are pleased to tell you that there’s a way to turn it off for good.

How to avoid Google Assistant when using Home gesture on Samsung Galaxy devices

Here’s how to keep Google Assistant from popping up while using full-screen gestures on your Samsung Galaxy running One UI:

Fix Google Assistant issue on Samsung Gesture

Step 1: Go to Settings, scroll down and tap on Apps.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the top-right corner.

Step 3: Tap Default apps.

Step 4: Go Device assistance app.

Step 5: Tap Device assistance app once again.

Step 6: Select None.

Now, swiping up won’t trigger Google Assistant.

Samsung is currently working on its next big UI facelift, One UI 2.0. Based on Google’s latest Android 10, the new UI is expected to pick up just where its predecessor left off and improve upon the basic functionalities as well as bring the most talked-about features. Samsung hasn’t announced a tentative release date yet, but we expect them to launch the Android 10 beta program in the coming weeks for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, while last flagships in S9 and Note 9 shall be receiving One UI 2.0 beta (Android 10) in November.
