QUICK ANSWER
To kill the Albatross on Island 4, catch and defeat the Tuna with the Professional Boss Lure, drop its body on open ground to summon the bird, then fight from cover with a Sniper Rifle — ducking inside a building during its dives and projectile attacks — and pick up the Albatross Head afterward to earn the Volcano coordinates.

The Albatross breaks the pattern of every fight before it. Instead of something you drag out of the water, this one is a terrorizing bird that circles Island 4 and hammers you from the air, so you can’t just hook it — you have to bait it into the open and win a patient shooting match. Get the bait chain right, pick the correct gun, and hold a doorway, and the whole thing becomes manageable even on a solo run.

How to beat the Albatross in How to Fish

The fight is really two halves — build the Tuna bait to summon the bird, then hold cover and chip its health down between attacks.

STEP 1/6

Buy the Professional Boss Lure

Head into the bait shop on the Rocks and pick up the Professional Boss Lure for $1200.

STEP 2/6

Catch and kill a Tuna

Cast the lure to hook the Tuna, defeat it, and grab its body — don’t sell or cook it, because the corpse is the bait.

STEP 3/6

Max your sniper ammo

Which gun to bring against the Albatross

Weapon How it performs
Sniper Rifle Best option — the only reliable reach for a high, fast-moving target. Line up the red dot between its passes.
SMG / Uzi Solid brute-force backup, especially when the bird commits to a close frontal charge.
Shotgun Skip it — no range at all, so you’ll whiff most shots on an airborne boss.

The Albatross spends nearly the whole fight circling high above the island, which is exactly where a Sniper Rifle earns its keep and a Shotgun becomes dead weight. The one time to swap is a frontal charge: as it barrels straight at you, a maxed SMG or Uzi is easier to land than trying to snap two quick sniper rounds. Keep both equipped and switch based on whether the bird is far and circling or close and diving.

QUICK WIN

On the sniper, equip the Iron Sight instead of the scope — right-click to aim and keep the target in the sight. Tracking the airborne bird is far easier without the zoomed-in scope fighting you.

Difficulty, healing, and not getting greedy

If the sniper aiming is the wall — and for a lot of solo players it is — drop the game to Easy in the server settings. Easy mode gives every creature noticeably less health and cuts its damage sharply (roughly a quarter less health and half the damage in the current version, though a later update could adjust those figures), which turns an unforgiving damage race into something you can grind out.

Above all, don’t get greedy. Trying to squeeze one more round in while the Albatross is already mid-attack can cost most of your health in a single hit. A steady loop — shoot, take cover, wait for the opening, shoot again — beats trying to out-damage it in the open every time.

Turning in the Albatross Head for the Volcano

Key Dropping the bird is not the end of the step. Once its health empties, pick up the Albatross Head off the ground before you wander off or sail away — the kill alone leaves your progression stuck. Carry the head back to the scared islander quest-giver on the Rocks and hand it over to receive the Volcano coordinates that open up Island 5.

Mistakes that stall the Albatross fight

The most common one is trying to hook the Albatross directly with a rod — it only ever appears if you bait it with a Tuna, so no lure will summon it. Right behind that is selling, cooking, or leaving the Tuna corpse behind; do any of those and the bird never spawns, forcing you to catch another Tuna from scratch.

In the fight itself, standing in the open or reaching for a Shotgun gets you punished — the dive attacks hit hard and the spread can’t touch a bird that far up. And even after a clean kill, plenty of players forget to grab and turn in the Albatross Head, which quietly blocks the route to Island 5 despite the boss being dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What boss comes after the Albatross on Island 5?

Island 5 is the Volcano, and its boss is the Mutated Bowhead Whale — the lava whale. Just as the Tuna body summons the Albatross, you summon this boss by placing the Bowhead’s body, so you first need to catch a Bowhead before you can trigger the fight. It’s a big step up: it hits hard enough to kill you in a couple of strikes and spits burning lava, so stock plenty of healing items first. Once it’s down, take the Whale Fin back to the hazmat NPC to finish the run.
