What to know
- Google Sheets is adding an Insert table action with adjustable row and column counts.
- The new controls expand its existing insertion tools, which already cover content such as charts, images, and links.
- We found the dormant feature in unreleased code from Google Sheets v1.26.391.02.90 and could not surface it in the app yet.
Google Sheets already offers documented tools for inserting content such as charts, images, and links. Now, a teardown of Google Sheets v1.26.391.02.90 shows that Google is extending those tools with a dedicated option for inserting tables.
The newly added strings describe an adjustable table palette where you can choose the number of rows and columns before inserting the table. We found the feature in code but could not surface it in the app yet.
Google Sheets is adding an Insert table action
The first new entry is straightforward: Google Sheets now contains labels for both a “Table” action and an “Insert table” command. Together, they point to a new table option within the app’s content insertion tools.
This is the net-new part of the finding. The broader ability to insert other kinds of content in Sheets is already public, but the new code specifically introduces table insertion in this build.
You can adjust the table’s rows and columns
The table tool goes beyond a single insertion command. Separate labels for “Rows” and “Columns” show that Google Sheets is preparing controls for choosing the table’s dimensions.
The remaining strings spell out four adjustments: increasing or decreasing the number of rows, and increasing or decreasing the number of columns. Each accessibility description also includes a %1$s placeholder for the current value, indicating that the palette will communicate the selected count as you change it.
These controls should make it possible to define a table’s basic layout as part of the insertion flow instead of adding an unspecified table and adjusting its dimensions afterward.
The Insert table feature is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Google Sheets builds for its rollout.
