Deep Research in Google Chat is already public, with Google documenting the broader capability earlier this year. The workflow can create a research report after presenting a proposed plan that includes its steps and sources.
Now, a teardown of Google Chat v2026.09.21.985089299.Release shows a new failure state for that workflow. The app is preparing to tell users when it cannot load the sources attached to a Deep Research plan.
Deep Research gets a source-loading error
The new string introduces a clear recovery message: “Unable to load sources. Please try again.” It belongs to the existing Deep Research execution-plan interface referenced throughout the app’s code.
That interface starts with a “Create a research report” prompt and then presents a plan-confirmation screen. From there, users can review the proposed steps, customize the plan, add or remove sources, and proceed with report generation. The code also includes a plural-aware source counter and controls for expanding the sources sheet.
The new source-loading message adds a specific failure state to that sequence. If the app cannot retrieve the sources associated with a plan, it can now explain the problem directly and invite the user to try again instead of leaving the sources area without a useful status.

The broader Deep Research capability is already public, so the discovery here is narrower: this build adds a previously undocumented source-loading error to its execution-plan and sources interface.
This new error state is not available to users yet, and we will watch future Google Chat builds for its rollout.
