Google Chat Is Preparing Client-Side Encrypted Spaces for Mobile [APK Teardown]

Client-side encrypted spaces in Google Chat currently create a desktop handoff for mobile users: if you need to read or send messages in one of these spaces, the app tells you to move to a computer.

Now, a teardown of Google Chat 2026.08.31.976486786.Release shows that this limitation is set to change. New strings explicitly say encrypted spaces are “coming soon to mobile,” while additional error messages reference encryption, decryption, and opening a space.

Encrypted spaces are coming to the mobile app

The clearest new string is a notice titled “Encrypted spaces are coming soon to mobile.” Its accompanying description explains the current restriction: client-side encrypted spaces are not supported in the mobile app yet, so users must open Google Chat on a computer to read and send messages.

Together, these strings show that Google Chat is preparing to bring both sides of the encrypted conversation experience to mobile. This is not merely a reference to viewing an encrypted space; the description specifically covers reading and sending messages.

The code also accounts for encryption and decryption failures

Other additions provide feedback messages for errors during encryption and decryption. There is also a separate message for an internal error while opening a space. These strings outline failure states Google Chat can communicate as it handles protected messages and spaces.

The wording directs users to submit feedback after an internal error, suggesting the mobile experience is being equipped with specific recovery messaging rather than a single generic failure notice.

We found these as dormant strings and could not surface the encrypted-space experience in the app. Client-side encrypted spaces are not available to mobile users yet, and we will watch future Google Chat builds for signs of a rollout.
