What to know
- Google is testing a debug option that sends Android Auto’s hotword, push-to-talk and on-screen mic activation directly into Gemini Live.
- Gemini Live on Android Auto is already public; this option changes how you enter it while leaving other entry points unchanged.
- Google app 17.72.13 adds the option’s title and a description naming the affected voice controls.
Gemini Live on Android Auto is already public—Google announced the capability in May 2025. The update here concerns how you start a Live conversation through Android Auto’s standard voice controls.
Our teardown of Google app 17.72.13 found a new debug option describing direct Live activation from those controls. This extends an existing feature that has been present in the app’s code since June 23, 2026, or earlier.
A debug option sends Android Auto’s voice controls straight to Live
The option is labeled “Enable Gemini Live only on Android Auto.” Its accompanying description names three entry points: hotword activation, push-to-talk and the on-screen microphone. Under the behavior described by this option, each starts Gemini Live directly.
The title and summary also define the scope: the routing change applies to Android Auto, while other entry points retain their existing behavior.
These strings describe a debug option; they do not establish a rollout or show that Google plans to offer it as a regular setting. For drivers who want a back-and-forth conversation, the change would put Live directly behind Android Auto’s familiar voice controls.
