What is Claude Duet, and what can it do?
Claude Duet is a research preview app where Claude acts proactively, using Claude Opus 5.5. You hand it work through messages, and it continues handling tasks while you are away.
Ahuja said the team is building Duet for professionals, small businesses and entrepreneurs juggling competing demands.
It delivers a morning brief, identifies inbox and calendar items that need your attention, and prepares replies for review. Work runs on a cloud virtual machine with a browser of its own, so your phone or laptop can be switched off.
Duet can also propose tasks for you to approve. You can specify which updates you want and how frequently it should contact you.
Before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting content, Claude Duet presents the proposed action and waits for your approval.
Anthropic’s task examples include:
- Locating unpaid invoices and preparing reminder messages.
- Putting payroll together for your review.
- Preparing contracts for sending.
- Creating briefs, presentation decks and dashboards.
- Arranging meetings.
- Producing financial and sales forecasts.
- Developing prototypes and web apps.
How is Claude Duet different from the Claude app, and where does it run?
Claude Duet initiates check-ins and works independently on a cloud computer, while the Claude app starts with you opening a conversation. Duet has separate iOS and Android apps and a web version at claude.ai.
Claude app and Claude Duet compared
| Question | Claude app | Claude Duet |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts? | You open a conversation. | It delivers a morning brief and contacts you when your attention is needed. |
| Where does the work run? | Within your conversation with Claude. | On a cloud computer, using a virtual machine and its own browser. |
| What context does it use? | Your Claude account. | Your account’s memory, skills and connected apps carry over, Ahuja also says your chats and projects are available. |
| How do you talk to it? | Through chats. | One ongoing conversation supports text and voice, Ahuja’s earlier update describes separate task threads and channels for different areas of work. |
| Where can you use it? | Through the Claude apps. | Standalone iOS and Android apps, web access at claude.ai, a Mac app is in development according to Ahuja’s earlier update. |
Ahuja’s October 23, 2026 update described task threads as places to check progress and give further direction. Channels provide separate spaces for work such as customer support, marketing and bookkeeping.
How much does Claude Duet cost, and how does usage work?
Claude Duet carries no additional charge for Pro and Max subscribers during the research preview. It shares your subscription’s usage allowance with your other Claude activity.
Background monitoring consumes that allowance, and bigger jobs, including financial models and presentation decks, need additional model turns and background processing. Duet checks connected accounts at intervals of a few hours because continuous monitoring would consume the allowance faster.
Pro and Max pricing and access
| Plan | Price | Claude Duet access |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month with monthly billing, or an advertised $17 a month with annual billing at $200 upfront. | Included during the preview, Ahuja’s rollout update places US Pro invitations after Max. |
| Max | Starts at $100 a month, with options offering 5x or 20x Pro’s usage. | Included during the preview, Ahuja’s rollout update gives US Max subscribers first priority. |
Your Duet tasks and other Claude work draw from the same pool, so background activity affects how much usage remains for conversations and other tasks.
What are Claude Duet’s approval rules and research preview limitations?
Claude Duet waits for your approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting content. Some actions remain prohibited even when you approve them, and the preview can still make mistakes about messages and priorities.
Approval and information safeguards
Anthropic details the protections in its Claude Duet safety, privacy and security post.
- Passwords and authentication tokens stay outside the agent’s view. Browser cookies and other credentials are also isolated from the model.
- The auto mode classifier provides a separate action check, assessing whether the proposed step matches your intent.
- A dedicated information classifier is designed to block disclosure of the most sensitive data, including full payment-card numbers and government identification. Sharing health or financial details requires your explicit instruction or consent.
- Sign-in credentials and complete bank account numbers also fall into the prohibited category. Duet is instructed to refuse disclosure even when you request it.
- Securities trading, transfers between bank accounts and access to another person’s account remain prohibited even with approval.
- Payments and money transfers, order deletion and account creation require fresh approval. Repeated permission does not exempt those actions from future checks.
- Browser safeguards address malicious instructions and prompt injection. Files uploaded through the browser receive the sensitive-information check too.
- It is also covered by Anthropic’s public bug bounty program.
Where should password requests appear?
Duet’s password form appears inside the app only after you initiate a sign-in. It does not reach you through messages or emailed links, and claude.ai is its only legitimate website. A password prompt claiming to be Duet anywhere else is illegitimate.
You can inspect ongoing tasks and change their direction. Disconnecting an app stops further access, but information Duet already learned remains until you reset its memory.
Duet retains conversations and remembered context across tasks until you remove the history or reset its memory. Account deletion erases all information it has saved.
Your connected Claude apps also carry into Duet. Turning an app off in either product disables that connection in both.
Which connected services can it use?
Claude Duet supports more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace. Anthropic gives these examples of connected work:
- Gmail and Slack: surface missed messages and help prepare responses.
- Intuit QuickBooks and Stripe: identify outstanding invoices and prepare reminders.
- Gusto: assemble payroll details, including hours, bonuses and reimbursements, for review and processing.
- LinkedIn: prepare job listings and publish them after your edits and approval.
- Docusign: prepare agreements and route them for review and signature.
- HubSpot: use deal and contact history to prepare follow-up emails.
- Canva: develop social campaigns around product launches.
- Shopify: create, design and manage a store.
- Link, Stripe’s wallet: make business purchases using a virtual card after you approve the spending, keeping your actual card number private.
- Shop Pay: complete purchases at online stores.
For Link purchases, you review the item and total, then authorize payment inside Link. The single-use card is restricted to the approved merchant and amount.
Before launch, Anthropic offered several large websites the option to block Duet’s visits. Some accepted that option.
What is still limited in the preview?
The research preview can make judgment errors and has limits on what it can show or handle.
- It can misunderstand a conversation or assign the wrong urgency to an item.
- New information can arrive between its scheduled checks and be missed.
- Personal errands, including ticket bookings, are less developed than its work tasks.
- You cannot yet view its browser.
- Duet currently operates in a separate app from the main Claude app.
- Its information safeguards can miss sensitive content or flag messages that are harmless.
What is the team working on next?
Ahuja said the team is reviewing feedback and releasing changes daily, with further details planned about Duet’s development, how people use it and upcoming features. Ahuja’s October 23, 2026 post said usage limits and international availability were priorities the team was working on.
Support for signing in with saved 1Password credentials is also planned, subject to your permission.
Join the Claude Duet waitlist if you have a US Pro or Max subscription. Anthropic will send an email when your access is ready.
