New XXJVU Galaxy S Firmware Leaked. Updates Phone with Value Pack (Face Unlock, Photo Editor and New Lock Screen)

XXJVU

It’s time again, time for another leaked firmware from Samsung for the Galaxy S i9000. This time it’s another 2.3.6 firmware, dubbed as XXJVU, a successor to XXJVT for Open Europe region.

But it’s still not just another firmware for lovely Galaxy S1. Yep! It packs in new Lock Screen from Galaxy Note, a photo editor app from Galaxy S2 and lastly the Ice Cream Sandwich special Face Unlock feature, all besides the usual Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. Check here to know more about what and what has changed with XXJVU firmware.

We know none of you, if not most of you, are happy with Sammy’s blunt announcement to not support Galaxy S with Android 4.0, but the XXJVU update is a major one which you’ll really enjoy, and should bring smiles on a bit choked faces of many Galaxy S users.

Yeah, we know you wanna try it, so we have a detailed guide right here on how to flash it.

Compatibility

This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (GT-i9000). Check your phone’s version in Settings – About Phone. It has to be “GT-i9000” for this firmware to be compatible with your phone. If it’s not GT-i9000, simply don’t try this ROM on your android handset — don’t even think about it if you care about your android device.

Warning

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to you or your device, we won’t be held liable — you only will be responsible, you’ve been warned!!!

Pre-Installation Tips:

  1. Installing/Flashing this ROM will erase your apps and data. So, it’s very important you back them up, before proceeding further. To backup your apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. Restore APN settings if Internet isn’t working for you. This Android backup guide would help you. And if you’ve rooted your Galaxy S, you can save application’s data too, using Titanium backup(free app on android market) to backup apps with data. And use this this app only  again to restore those apps with data.
  2. Drivers! — it’s important you’ve the proper drivers installed. Download links below:
  3. If you have Samsung’s PC software Kies installed, un-install it first because it may interrupt the flashing process. If you’ve installed it for sake of drivers which otherwise weren’t working, make sure you exit the Kies completely before beginning the procedure below.

How To Install XXJVU on Galaxy S i9000 (for experienced users)

Well, it’s pretty easy if you’ve already had fun flashing using Odin a decent number of times already. Download XXJVU (password: samfirmware.com) and install it using Odin3 v1.7. Put the *CODE* file in PDA tab, *Modem* file in Phone tab and *multi CSC* file in CSC tab. Put the .pit file in PIT tab and make sure Re-Partition is ticked too. Hit Start!

If you didn’t get what was said above, don’t worry one bit, a detailed guide for you is just below.

Step-By-Step Guide (for not so experienced users)

Although the guide below is very much detailed, step-by-step and sufficient for you to easily flash the XXJVU firmware on your Galaxy S, but in case if you want to watch a video of how you are going to do it, that is, flashing the XXJVU firmware is flashed using Odin, check out this video showing installation of an earlier firmware ‘XWJVB’ on Galaxy S. The procedure is same, so it would be helpful for those who are new.

  1. Download XXJVU firmware first. Filename: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.rar. Size: 225.9 MB. Download Link. (password: samfirmware.com)
  2. Also download this PIT file: s1_odin_20100512.pit
  3. Extract the downloaded file ‘I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.rar’ to get these 3 files:
    1. CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
    2. GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5
    3. MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1059471.tar.md5
  4. Download Odin PC Software which we will be using to flash the XXJVU Android 2.3.6 ROM on Galaxy S. Filename: Odin3 v1.7.zip. Size: 192.55 KB. Download Link.
  5. Extract Odin3 v1.7.zip to get .exe file – Odin3 v1.7.exe. Run it when asked in step 8 below.
  6. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC.  Then Switch it Off. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
  7. Now, put the Galaxy S in “Download Mode” — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power until a screen saying ‘Download Mode’ comes up.
  8. Open Odin (from step 5) — Odin3 v1.7.exe.
  9. Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get “Added! !” message, than probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve drivers installed (links given above under heading ‘Pre-Installation thoughts’).
  10. Now, in Odin, select these files at respective tabs (for visual help, see the screenshot at step 11 below):
    1. Click the PDA Tab, and select CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5 (from step 3.1)
    2. Click the Phone Tab, and select MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar.md5 (from step 3.3)
    3. Click the CSC Tab, and select GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5 (from step 3.2)
    4. Click the PIT Tab, and select s1_odin_20100512.pit (from step 2)
  11. Make sure the ‘Re-Partition’checkbox in ODIN is selected. Also, Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes should be selected too. Leave everything else on Odin untouched.
  12. Double check everything said in step 10 and 11 above. Your Odin’s screen, after selecting all the files and ticking and not-ticking the checkboxes, should look like this:
  13. Now, hit the START button to begin the flashing process. When it finishes, your phone will automatically reboot, upon which you can unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. (Check screenshot below)
  14. When it restarts, your Galaxy S will be running the Android OS, v2.3.6 XXJVU firmware.
  15. Off the screen and then open with the all new Galaxy Note ported lock screen. Find the Photo Editor app in app drawer, a port from Galaxy S2. And check the options for Face Unlock set up — go to Settings » Location and Security » Set Screen Lock. Enjoy!
  16. Lastly, if internet isn’t working, fill in the correct APN settings under mobile networks settings, under wireless and network settings.

Root and CWM for XXJVU

And before you ask, root for XXJVU isn’t out yet, which it should be in a matter of hours. We’ll update you with same as sson as we come to know of it.

Link to Root Galaxy S on XXJVU (also installs Clockworkmod recovery)

IMPORTANT NOTE: If Odin doesn’t seem to be progressing/doing anything for more than a minute, do the following:

Disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 6.

Share your thoughts, observations and improvements (and disappointments) you see in the XXJVU firmware in comments below. If you face a problem in installation, don’t hesitate to ask us below.

  4. Seriously? Those corner cutters can only manage an update to 2.3.6? Gingerbread updated to 2.3.7 ages ago… Samsung seriously need a kick up the behind. OK, so one core at standard frequency is not enough to run ICS with Touchwiz- but to keep all of us (who bought our handsets in good faith, expecting them to be kept updated for more than a year) happy and well served, they could have worked with Google to port the stock ICS experience of the Nexus S to the Galaxy S. Thank goodness for CyanogenMod and others, for bringing Android 4.0 to the I9000 and related variants…

    1. It’s not the CPU, but the RAM that’s the problem. The new Touchwiz 4 on SGS 2 etc needs quite a lot of RAM to run smoothly with the stuff they add like video calling, so Samsung is only updating phones with 1 GB :/ That’s the thing. Samsung’s custom UI is officially the most bloated that it needs 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly.

But again, the SGS is just too old to deserve a 3rd major Android upgrade. Newer phones like Galaxy W should get it too if the SGS is eligible.

  13. Hi Abhijeet, Kapil and All,

I Had XXJVS 2.3.5 Installed and works GREAT! And then I Installed XXJVU 2.3.6 ( it was only 3 files CODE, MODEM and CSC without the PIT ) and I unchecked the Re-Partition because I had no Pit file included. Flashing and ROM was perfect, but I noticed that my phone was worming up more than usual. So I turned off and took the battery out for a few minutes until it cool down. When I turned back on, it’s still warmed up after a few minutes. So, I installed back to XXJVS and it’s good :-). Just FYI. Thanks for the GREAT work to ALL THE DEVELOPERS. I will try again this firmware later 🙂

    1. Hey moh a,
The pit file can be downloaded from this thread! It’s in the description at step 2. Re-partition must be selected.
Tip: make a backup of everything on the forehand using Titanium Backup from the market

    2. That heating up problem is random and can be caused by any ROM version on any phone. Usually goes away after flashing to another ROM and then flashing it back to the ROM that is causing the heating problems. 🙂

  17. I’m a complete newbie to this, but managed to upgrade using this great guide. The only problem I have is that now some apps (just a few, not all) from the Android market won’t install, stating “This item is not compatible with your device”. They loaded OK when I was on XXJVO. Thanks for the guide.

  20. Hey everyone……the wifi connection is not caused by the firmware. This can be solved by changing the DCHP lease period from “infinite” to any value (1 day – few weeks) on your router

  23. Thank you for the great guide. Worked like a charm for me.

There is just one thing that doesn’t seem to work. I tried to restore a backup (created it after installing XXJVU) via CWM. What I got is a boot loop. I can’t even boot into recovery anymore. Tried this again after reinstalling XXJVU nd I get the same result with using the recovery console and the CWM manager.

    Any suggestions?

  26. First time flasher here!

I flashed the firmware and then rooted it according to the next post. Well, all good but some issues.

    1) When I access the gallery, the phone says there are no photos. I had to install ES File Explorer to be able to see the photos I have.
    2) If I take a photo, I cannot see it by pressing the preview on the bottom right hand corner on the camera screen.
    3) I use the phone in Finnish and there are some language mixed ups sometimes in the menus. For example, when finished charging the battery, it says “vaihdettu” in Finnish which in English means “changed”. Quite funny.
    4) A couple of times an Android application has crashed. I don’t remember the name exactly but it is one of those main applications, which always consume a lot of battery. The phone loses all the signal, I get an error message on the screen and I have to restart the phone. Once it happened after a call.

About backing up before flashing, I used Backup Master. It was a bit disappointing that it did not back up my phone book. I lost all my contacts as the phone was wiped clean. Well, I should have known this would happen because it didn’t say “contacts” in the back up options. Have to blame myself for that.

But putting aside the things above, with rooting, the phone is faster than before. The battery life is much better and as I am a newbie in all this, it’s all really exciting to me. Will go for a custom rom soon!

    Cheers!

  35. Hey all! I think I have bricked my phone.

I tried to flash XXJVU from samfirmware using Odin3 v1.7 as told. I came from a Ginger Real rom. However, while flashing Odin got stuck. So I disconnected my phone from the PC, removed the battery and proceeded to flash again. However, I found that I was unable to turn on my phone anymore. It cannot power up or go intro recovery mode or go into download mode.

Any advice? Or is my phone bricked 🙁

    1. Oh.. it skipped my attention earlier. How is the phone now? You sure your phone was i9000 (modem number, that is).

Anyway, since you mentioned you can no longer boot into download mode, I would advise you to buy USB Jig (from ebay, perhaps) and boot into download mode using that, and flash a firmware again. Jig doesn’t cost much.. just 2-3 dollars, I guess.

Let us know if you need any more help.

    2. Its still bricked! I sure it’s GT-i9000. It says so in the settings as well as in the sticker beneath the battery. I did some research on the usb jig and it appears to be useful only for those with a soft-brick. My phone should be in a hard brick since it doesn’t on, go into download mode or recovery. It just shows a black screen. 🙁

I’m now looking at Jtag but it’s really complicated. sigh

    3. USB Jig will help you. You should really buy a USB Jig and give it a try. I believe it will help you boot into download mode and then you can flash a firmware using Odin.

    4. Hi there, this is easy , i will give you few advices let me know if they work
      1. Turn off you device until u hear it vibrating
      2. take out your battery, Press Menu, Down Volume and restart button
      3. Insert your battery it should be on Download mode, plug it to your PC then Windows will recognize you USB.

      Hope i make sense.

  80. Installed several time without any problems, but, wifi connection seems to have problems. Connect and disconnect the wifi randomly. I think this should be fixed somehow. With old firmware this doesn’t happen, even with new Icecream for Samsung GT-I9000.
    Thx.

    1. Use 7-zip software to extract it. And make sure you are entering the password rightly.

    1. I think we have to do the as stated above:

IMPORTANT NOTE: If Odin doesn’t seem to be progressing/doing anything for more than a minute, do the following:Disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 6.

  120. Thanks a lot for this advice. I’m about to flash my SGS1 for the first time using Odin, and I’m worried about doing something wrong.
Just curious if I can flash XXJVU (2.3.6) directly on my I9000 with baseband version I9000XXJVO (2.3.3).

Should I flash each and every in-between firmwares (XXJVP, XXJVQ, …etc.) one by one?

    OR

Should I just flash the XXJVU on top of XXJVO?

    I’d appreciate anyone’s help!!

  121. By the way, my Kernel version is : 2.6.35.7-I9000BOJV9-CL404614
and Build number is : GINGERBREAD.BOJV9

in case these info might help? 🙂

Should I just flash the XXJVU on top of XXJVO?

    I’d appreciate anyone’s help!!

  144. hi kapil, i have upgraded my cell i9000 in 4.0 ICS by above process. but i wanna go back to previous version.  is there any way to get back 2.3.6.
    pls help me……..

    1. Install XXJVU linked above. Or if you want, install latest Samsung firmware for Galaxy S — XXJW4 ( nerdschalk.com/galaxy-s-gets-official-value-pack-firmware-xxjw4-includes-touchwiz-4/ )

    2. Thanks kapil i get back 2.3.6 from 4.0.3 ICS.
Now tell me that CWM is necessary after installing on 2.3.6.
Actually i cant restore backup now by backup master apk. I created backup when ICS.   can i restore sms via anyway. Backup master apps show backup files but when i restore it shows that no data to restore.

    3. Whether root access is required or not depends on the app you are using. We usually suggest Titanium Backup to take backup of apps, which requires root access.

Also, we had suggested you take backup using sms backup and call logs apps by Ritesh Sahu… if you didn’t use those apps, we couldn’t help you with that.

I don’t think Backup Master can restore apps’ data, you need titanium backup or my backup pro apps with root access for that.

  145. i tried to upgrade my phone but odin showed fail. i disconnected my phone and switched it off. i removed the battery and tried to switch it on but it is no longer coming on again whether in download mode or normally. please help cos i have not used the phone at all…..

    1. You sure your phone is Samsung Galaxy S international version, i9000. And not any other version.

    2. do you think i need to flash it?. i a really scared o. i have not even used it for a week

    3. If you can’t go to download mode, you can’t flash any firmware on it. So, can you go to download mode (by holding 3 buttons together – VolumeDown+Home+Power)?

  185. hey hi, I’ve succeed to upgrade XXJVU 2.3.6 in my Galaxy S, but after showing PASS my phone is not booting I tried Vol Up , Vol Down + Home + Power but its not working either can anyone suggest what should I do ?

    1. Isn’t using the power button only booting up the phone?

Do this: remove the battery for 5 seconds and then place it back. Then, hold the power button until you see the Galaxy S logo to boot the phone.

    2. I did try everything to boot up by using power button, Up Volume key + Home + power button, Down Volume key + Home + power button for recovery mode and download mode but it isn’t responding just dead. My galaxy S is GT-I9003

    3. I have this problem as well..I tried two other updates before this one, but nothing can make him pass that ‘GALAXY S’ screen…fucking phone….btw I had to switch my mainboard (100$) already because internal memory was busted (it’s welded to a mainboard so when that shit is gone you have to change whole damn thing), because it used to loop S animation endlessly, I just got it back from service and now this. Should I just put it up my ass since it already fucked me so much? Sorry, had to let my anger somewhere. Any solution on all this would be awesome tho.

    4. Hehe, it’s okay you used this page to unleash your anger, and frustration.
Sometimes, this problem could be solved pretty easily by doing this; remove battery for 4-5 seconds and then place it back. Reboot to recovery and do factory reset and wipe cache twice. Now reboot from recovery and it should boot fine. If not, umm, try flashing the latest xxjw4 firmware or maybe the old good firmware xxjvs (you can search both these firmwares on this site to get links and guides). Good luck!!

Good luck!!

  187. hey hi, I’ve succeed to upgrade XXJVU 2.3.6 in my Galaxy S, but after showing PASS my phone is not booting I tried Vol Up , Vol Down + Home + Power but its not working either can anyone suggest what should I do ?

    1. Isn’t using the power button only booting up the phone?

Do this: remove the battery for 5 seconds and then place it back. Then, hold the power button until you see the Galaxy S logo to boot the phone.

      1. I did try everything to boot up by using power button, Up Volume key + Home + power button, Down Volume key + Home + power button for recovery mode and download mode but it isn’t responding just dead. My galaxy S is GT-I9003

  191. hi kapil i press vol down+power+home and nothing happen!! it just turn on !! my phone is galaxy s 9000

    1. Maybe then, download mode isn’t available on your phone (by mistake). Btw, you are pressing and holding them 3 buttons together, right? If nothing else works, you can a low-costing small hardware tool called USB Jig, search for it on your local eBay, it should cost you some 3-4 US dollars. Plugging in this tool starts download mode on Galaxy S and other Samsung Android devices.

  194.  I have just upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S from Froyo to Gingerbread 2.3.6
, XXJVU, on my GT-I9000 and then rooted XXJVU and installed
Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM). I am with Virgin Mobile. I had NO problems
at all and my phone is working better than ever. I simply followed as above. This was the very first time I had attempted any such update on a mobile phone, albeit I have many times  partioned and formatted PC hard drives along with updating and installing operating systems. Most problems arise because we do not read/digest instructions carefully before attempting to do the quest. Take your time, read thoroughly then read thoroughly again and make sure you have all of the files to hand. Then check and double check your progress with the intructions and diagrams provided. You will be suprised how often you will make that one error/mistake because you did not check and double check.

    1. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts, man. Really appreciate it. After reading the instructions carefully, it was pretty easy thing, right?

  197. Good day sirs! :] Just to make sure, that my phone is compatible with
this method, I am on a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 international edition.
    with Android version 2.3.3

    Gingerbread [ PDA: JV9, PHONE, JV9 , CSC : JV9 (XTC) ] Baseband version: i9000DXJV9

    2) If I want to root my phone, do I need to root first? THEN do this firmware upgrade?

    1. Your phone is compatible. You don’t need root to install a firmware, so simply go ahead and install XXJVU using the instructions above. And btw, the latest firmware is XXJW4 — nerdschalk.com/galaxy-s-gets-official-value-pack-firmware-xxjw4-includes-touchwiz-4/– and I think you should try that in place of XXJVU.

  218. Hi , i just updated my GT-i1900 galaxy s Vodafone NZ with the xxjvu firmware and it worked fine but when i get a call or make a call the phone leaves a notification in the top left corner that looks like the sd card scanning icon (but smaller and grey) and also leaves a notification in the drop down from the home screen which cannot be deleted and only goes away when the phone is turned on and off ….is there a fix for this ?

    1. Maybe a factory reset from recovery mode would fix it. Try that. To boot into recovery mode, power off phone and then hold Volume UP + Home + Power keys together till you see the Samsung logo.

  219. Thanks for the suggestion Kapil but i still have the same problem ….its annoying having it just sit there and not being able to clear it arrgh

    1. Of course you can back to xxjvh, but I would suggest you to go back to one better firmware, XXJVS — nerdschalk.com/download-install-xxjvs-firmware-update-galaxy-s-i9000-to-android-2-3-5/

  220. Hey Kapil …Here is the screen shot …when i turn on the phone its like there is 2 media scans running but both dissapear once they are finished …this grey one only reappears when i make a call or recieve a call …hope that helps …thanks for your help.

    1. Where’s the screenshot? You can upload it on tinypic.com and give me a url of it.

  221. Thanks again …will wait and see if there is a fix otherwise will go to xxjvs as per your advise ..cheers

  222. hey …installed xxjw4 but still have the annoying icon in top left after calling …hopefully there will be a fix …do you think its a sim problem?

    1. Yes. It seems a sim problem. Maybe that contacts are saved on your sim and that’s why that icon shows up. Try saving a contact in phone itself, or better, on your Gmail account, and then test call that number. Does it appear then too?

  223. ok will try ..importing numbers from my sim to phone and will only display phone and gmail contacts…just tried but no different …

    1. Remove one contact from sim so that it remains exclusively on phone or Gmail account. Or better, create one test contact with a test number and then place a call to it.

  274. I installed a ICS rom for my galaxy S. after a while all my app started crashing. I cleared the cache and wiped data + factory reset. now my phone is rebooting non stop. all I see is the galaxy s logo and “kernel semaphore”. I cannot start in recovery with volup home power. can I follow this guide to re install the stock firmware? Is this kernel semaphore going to be a problem?

    1. Yes, just install this firmware, xxjvu, to get your Galaxy S to working condition.

As for the ICS rom, try the AOKP rom for Galaxy S…. search “Galaxy S AOKP theAndroidSoul” on Google to get our guide on it.

  390. I followed this tutorial to the letter, but the install got stuck saying “Do not turn off target”. After 20 minutes I had to reset the phone which then wouldn’t turn on past the ‘bricked’ symbol. I managed to get the phone back into download mode and following the XXJW4 firmware install instead (from this site) it now seems to be working OK.

  396. “THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE GREAT” – I am a total novice. But your instructions were so clear I just finished updating my 4 year old Galaxy S from Eclair to Gingerbread.xxjvu and I am very thrilled I did it with absolutely no technical background and by just following your instructions above. The links were not working but I simply googled the filenames and found the links easily. Not only do I have a new look Galaxy S but I also feel like I learnt a lot about mobile phones, firmware, Odin, etc. THANKS A TON AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
