Use the Excising Knife at the eye in the poison pool inside the northernmost circular room of The Underbelly in the Vaults of Atal’Utek, then return to the Altar of Corrosion to unlock the Egg Specialist or Egg Evasion choice node.
The Excising Knife is one of the discovery items tied to the Altar of Corrosion progression on the Coiled Isle in Patch 12.1. You do not spend coins on this locked node; you use the knife in the Vaults of Atal’Utek, pick up the quest item from the eye, and bring it back to the Altar.
What the Excising Knife does at the Altar of Corrosion
The Excising Knife is used for the Skull of Er’inye discovery path. It is a specific quest item route for one locked Altar of Corrosion choice node, not a general currency unlock or a reusable Altar upgrade button.
The Altar of Corrosion is part of Coiled Isle outdoor progression in World of Warcraft Patch 12.1, with the Vaults of Atal’Utek acting as the main area for this item-use route.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Item | Excising Knife |
| Use location | The eye in the poison pool in The Underbelly |
| Discovery path | Skull of Er’inye |

Getting the Excising Knife from Temple Incursion

Before going into The Underbelly, complete a Temple Incursion in the Vaults of Atal’Utek event rotation and loot the reward for the Excising Knife. The event chain shown in-game runs as 3x Temple Strike -> 1x Temple Incursion -> 1x Ancient Foe, so watch the rotation and jump in when Temple Incursion is active.
Do not plan around a fixed drop rate. Treat Temple Incursion as the farm source shown for the knife, then move to the northern route only after the item is in your bags.
How to use the Excising Knife in World of Warcraft
This route takes the knife from the Vaults event reward to the hidden eye in The Underbelly, then back to the Altar of Corrosion.
STEP 1/7
Loot the Excising Knife
Complete a Temple Incursion in the Vaults of Atal’Utek event rotation and loot the Excising Knife from the reward.

STEP 2/7
Check Er’inye’s hint
Talk to Er’inye near the Altar of Corrosion and choose the Excising Knife dialogue option if you want the in-game riddle context.

STEP 3/7
Go north in the Vaults
Head toward the northern part of the Vaults of Atal’Utek, following the route toward The Underbelly.

STEP 4/7
Fight through the elite tomb
Push through the elite-packed tomb area on the way to the northernmost circular room.

STEP 5/7
Enter the northernmost circular room
Reach the circular chamber in The Underbelly, near the map location shown around 69.0, 75.7.

STEP 6/7
Click the eye in the poison pool
Interact with the eye in the middle of the green poison pool to pick up the quest item.

STEP 7/7
Return to the Altar of Corrosion
Bring the quest item back to the Altar of Corrosion and turn it in to unlock the choice node.

Wait until the Excising Knife is already in your bags before entering The Underbelly, because the route sends you through elites and the hidden interaction is not at the Altar itself.

Egg Specialist or Egg Evasion choice
After the turn-in, the Altar of Corrosion opens a choice between Egg Specialist and Egg Evasion. Pick based on what slows you down more in Coiled Isle outdoor content: killing eggs quickly, or surviving their burst damage cleanly.
| Talent | Effect |
|---|---|
| Egg Specialist | Increases damage done to eggs by 100%. |
| Egg Evasion | Reduces damage taken from egg bursts by 75%. |
Egg Specialist is the faster pick when you want cleaner egg clears. Egg Evasion is the safer pick if egg bursts are the thing forcing defensives, downtime, or deaths.
Common Excising Knife mistakes
The locked Altar of Corrosion node is not opened by dumping coins into the tree. The Excising Knife has to be used in The Underbelly, on the eye in the poison pool, before the Altar turn-in becomes relevant.
Also, do not treat the northern room as a quick click-and-leave stop. The route runs through an elite tomb, so repair, clear bag space, and be ready for combat before heading into the Vaults of Atal’Utek northern section.
