[icon name=”link” class=”” unprefixed_class=””] How to Root Sprint Note 4 on Android 5.1.1 OG5 build

The Sprint Galaxy Note 4 received the Android 5.1.1 update today with build number N910PVPU4COG5. And like all other 5.1.1 updates from Samsung, the Sprint Note 4 5.1.1 update also breaks the CF-Auto-Root tool by Chainfire. Leaving us with no root method available for the time being for Note 4 N910P 5.1.1 OG5 build.

Thankfully, TWRP recovery is still working, but don’t think you’d flash the SuperSU zip from recovery and get root. No, you’ll end up with a bootloop that can’t be fixed because we don’t have OG5 tar (full Odin flashable firmware) yet, and you can’t flash the earlier OF5 / OE1 firmware either because the 5.1.1 OG5 update upgraded the bootloader on your device and it can’t be downgraded back. So DON’T try SuperSU from TWRP. The only way to root the Sprint Note 4 on 5.1.1 is via a custom kernel with root injected, which is yet to be developed.

If you haven’t updated to 5.1.1 OG5 update yet, and if you care about having root access then we’d recommend you to NOT install the 5.1.1 OTA for now. Wait for a few days, and someone from the community should soon be able to come up with a safe way to update to 5.1.1 OG5 with a pre-rooted ROM, OR fire up a custom kernel for the OG5 build with root baked-in which you can flash via Odin or TWRP and get root on your Note 4 N910P running  5.1.1 OG5 build.

  1. Of course I try to root while multitasking on the day of this OTA update to 5.1.1. My shiny new note 4 is stuck in the incessant boot loop. I can still connect to odin so I anxiously await any updates on this thread. Any advice would be great.

    1. I had same problem…
To fix, go to sprint note 4 XDA Forum and download any 5.1.1 costom ROM zip. There is ACIP, CM, OR CMREMIX ( Anyone is equally good). Put the downladed zip file on your miniSD card, insert it back to your note 4 phone and flash the zip. You might also wanna download and flash slim gapps too. It worked for me. Even though I don’t have Samsung TW ROM but my phone is working well. Hopefully, someone will post the 5.1.1 stock tar soon. Good luck

    2. thanks. I ended up doing just that. I had to flash CWM with Odin first, then was able to flash TWRP and wipe everything. I tried to flash a few ROMs with Odin, but that wouldn’t work. Flashing CRDroid with TWRP worked though. I used this. http://galaxynote4root.com/t-mobile-note-4-roms/crdroid-rom-for-galaxy-note-4-android-5-1-1-root/. Also, I did stumble upon rooted stock ROMs on XDA, but haven’t tried to flash. Some app crash after reboot (camera, gapps), but seems to settle in after a couple minutes and is stable. Although I don’t know how it compares with stock yet.
