Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ users are eagerly waiting for the moment the devices start receiving the stable version of Android Oreo.

Instead of receiving an OTA notification prompting them to download and install the stable Android Oreo on their handsets, it is emerging that Samsung Galaxy S8 users are receiving a totally unexpected update. Apparently, Sam Mobile reports that the current update rolling out to the S8 and S8+ not only takes Oreo beta users back to the old Android Nougat OS, but it installs an older build of the OS carrying firmware version XXU1AQK7 (the latest build is XXU1AQL5).

As it is, this has been reported in India, which is one of the few markets that joined the Galaxy Beta Program for Android Oreo after the initial release in the U.S. On the brighter side, the update is only available for download via Smart Switch. Up to now, it’s not clear why Samsung is rolling out old software disguised as a “new software update”, but we hope to get an explanation sooner than later.

Meanwhile, unless you want to go back to an old Android Nougat build, which means a lot of things including losing all of your data (an update to Oreo will keep your data), our advice is that stay away from Smart Switch and the latest Galaxy S8 update.

Since the stable release is expected to start rolling out to those who were in the Galaxy S8 Oreo beta program first before hitting other non-beta users, it is natural that most of them are excited about receiving the next OTA notification to download the new update. This level of excitement might cause some users to take action even without reading the details of the update.

Besides, the update weighs about 3GB, which is too big for anyone who is already using Oreo beta. If anything, this group should receive a significantly smaller package compared to non-beta users. Don’t be carried away!
