GUIDE: ROOT SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S 10.5 SM-T800
Before you begin with the instructions below, make sure your android device is adequately charged — at least 50% battery of the device.
STEP 0: CHECK DEVICE MODEL NO.
To make sure your device is eligible with this, you must first confirm its model no. in ‘About device’ option under Settings. Another way to confirm model no. is by looking for it on the packaging box of your device. It must be SM-T800!
This guide is specifically for the Samsung Galaxy TAB S 10.5 with model no. SM-T800. Do not use the procedures discussed here on any other device of Samsung or any other company. You have been warned!
STEP 1: BACKUP YOUR DEVICE
Back up important data and stuff before you start playing around here as there are chances you might lose your apps and app-data (app settings, game progress, etc.), and in rare case, files on the internal memory, too.
For help on Backup and Restore, check out our exclusive page on that linked right below.
► ANDROID BACK UP AND RESTORE GUIDE: APPS AND TIPS
STEP 2: INSTALL LATEST DRIVER
You must have proper and working driver installed on your windows computer to be able to successfully root your Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.
In case you’re not sure, follow the link below for a definitive guide for installing driver for your Samsung device on your computer.

DOWNLOADS
Download the CF Auto Root file given below and transfer it to a separate folder on your computer (just to keep things tidy, that is).

CF AUTO ROOT FILE

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Example video: If you haven’t used Odin before to flash a file on your phone before, then we suggest you first watch a video of that to get familiar with the process. The video demonstrates flashing of a Recovery on Galaxy S3, but since the procedure is same, the video will help: Click here to watch the video
Important Note: Backup important files stored on internal SD card of your device, so that in case a situation arises requiring you to do a factory reset after flashing the CF Auto Root, which might delete internal sd card too, your files will remain safe on PC.
- Extract/Unzip the Odin zip file, Latest Odin_ v3.09.zip on your computer (using 7-zip free software, preferably) to get the following files:
- Odin3 v3.09.exe
- Odin3.ini
- Extract/Unzip the CF-Auto-Root file, CF_AutoRoot_Port_T800_BeansTown106.tar.md5.zip, on your computer (using 7-zip free software, preferably). You’ll get the following file:
- CF_AutoRoot_Port_T800_BeansTown106.tar.md5
└ Paste this file into the folder where you extracted the files in Step 1.
- CF_AutoRoot_Port_T800_BeansTown106.tar.md5
- Disconnect the Galaxy Tab S from PC if it is connected.
- Double-click the Odin3 v3.09.exe file to open Odin.
- Boot your Galaxy Tab S into Download Mode:
- Connect your Galaxy Tab S 10.5 to PC. Odin window will show an Added!! message in bottom left box. Odin’s screen would look like this:
If you don’t get the Added! message, here are some troubleshooting tips:- Make sure you have installed driver for Galaxy Tab S 10.5 as said above in ‘Before you begin..’ section.
- If you have already installed driver, then uninstall them and reinstall back.
- Connect using a different USB port on your PC.
- Try a different USB cable. The original cable that came with your phone should work best, if not, try any other cable that’s new and of good quality.
- Reboot your phone and PC and then try again.
- Load the firmware file (extracted in Step 2) into Odin as instructed below:
- Now in the Option section of Odin, make sure that Re-Partition box is unchecked. (Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time boxes remain checked, while all other boxes remain unchecked.)
- Double check the above two steps.
- Click the Start button to begin flashing, and wait until you see a PASS! message in Odin’s top left box.
- When you get either of RESET! or PASS! message, your device will restart automatically. We got the RESET! message, as shown in the screenshot below. You can then disconnect your phone from PC.
If you see FAIL message instead of the PASS in Odin’s top left box, that’s a problem. Try this now: disconnect your Samsung Galaxy Tab S from PC, close Odin, reboot your device in Download mode by pressing the same combination of keys as explained in Step 5, then open Odin and repeat from Step 3 of this guide again.
Also, If device is Stuck at setup connection or on any other process, then too, try this: disconnect your Samsung Galaxy Tab S from PC, close Odin, reboot your device in Download mode by pressing the same combination of keys as explained in Step 5, then open Odin and repeat from Step 3 of this guide again.
NOTE: It may happen that your tablet doesn’t automatically boot into recovery and root your phone. In that case follow the following above procedure except that in Step 7, Auto Reboot option is un-checked and then the instructions below:
- Boot your Galaxy Tab S 10.5 into Recovery Mode: Press and hold these 3 buttons together: Volume Up + Power + Home.
- Now, this will start the rooting process and will reboot the phone automatically when the process is done.
That’s all. If you need help regarding this, feel free to ask us in comments below.
FEEDBACK US!
It was easy to root your Galaxy Tab S with CF Auto Root tool, right? Let us know how you plan to use root privileges on your Galaxy Tab S.
Your suggestions and queries, if any, are most welcomed!
Good news: Your instructions are easy to follow. Bad news: It didn’t work. After following instructions above, all went correctly, Knox tripped, but root-checking programs said no root, and root based management programs would not work. Followed your instructions to re-install (from Ste 3), but this time the tablet got stuck in the download mode and cannot be reset or shut off. Wondering if my tablet is bricked. Any assistance would be welcome!
1. How do I get the device to shut off?
2. Any hope for reinstalling firmware if needed?
3. Can root be obtained?
Device is TM-800, OS kitkat. Thanks!
An update: I was able to reboot (pressed all buttons down, held for 10 secs), then when I restarted it went into installation mode automatically. Said installation was successful, but still no root. For kicks, I re-installed the files again using instructions above. Odin says installation successful (PASS!), but root checker says no root.
What’s the model no. of your device exactly?
It’s an SM-T800 with Android 5.0.2.
What you can do is flash the TWRP recovery and then root using TWRP. Okay. Here is how.
Download TWRP form here – http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/chagallwifi/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-chagallwifi.tar Now, don’t extract it. And flash this file the same way you were flashing the cf root tar file.
Let device reboot.
Now, download the SuperSU root package from here – download.chainfire.eu/supersu
Copy the SuperSU file to your device, and remember the location.
Then, Power it off. And hold Power+Home+Volume Up together until you see Samsung’s logo. Then let go of the buttons. You will enter TWRP.
Now, in TWRP, tap on Install, and then browse and select the SuperSU file that you downloaded and transferred to device above.
Do the swipe action to confirm installation. When done, tap on Reboot system to restart the device. That’s it. You will have root access. And TWRP — one great utility!
Let me know if you need help.
Thanks for these tips – I will do them and get back with you in a few hours. I appreciate it.
Hello again – I was able to use TWRP & SuperSU successfully last night and the device is rooted. Now I have to figure out exactly what I can do with my rooted device. I noticed that deleting Samsung junk apps only leads to them being auto-reinstalled. I have to figure out how to stop that. And now on to rooting my cellphone (Samsung SM-G900V).
Thank you very much again. This was very helpful after 3 previous attempts failed.

After installation my tab went into some sort of boot loop – “…updating aps…”. Was able to recover by plugging in to charger and holding all 3 buttons in. Tab came up in charging mode (green battery). I let it charge to 100%. Rebooted into recovery and did a factory reset. Just needed the right incantation…
‘Updating apps’ screen is not bootloop. It’s just a lengthy procedure ever since Lollipop was introduced. Just wait and watch when you get ‘updating apps’ screen, and device will be alright on next few minutes once it’s done.
Did your device reboot automatically after finishing the ‘updating apps’ part?
