In Palworld 1.0, Awakening is one of the final ways to push a strong Pal even further. The system is built around Awakening Crystals, special consumable items crafted from materials associated with the World Tree. Once used, a Crystal permanently awakens an eligible Pal, giving it an additional stat boost and a distinctive awakened appearance. The current 1.0.3-era information also makes the system more practical than it was when Awakening first arrived, particularly because World Tree Holy Water has become easier to obtain.

The important distinction is that you do not simply collect a generic Awakening Crystal and use it on anything. Each Crystal has an element, and the element needs to be compatible with the Pal you are awakening. For example, a Fire Pal requires a Fire Awakening Crystal, while a Dragon Pal requires a Dragon Awakening Crystal.

How to craft an Awakening Crystal

Once your Ancient Workbench is ready and you have enough materials, crafting the Crystal is straightforward. Reach Technology Level 67 and spend 5 Technology Points to unlock the Ancient Workbench.

Build the Ancient Workbench using 50 Soralite Ingots, 5 AI Cores, and 20 Bio Batteries. Choose the Pal you want to awaken and check its element before gathering materials.

Travel to the World Tree and farm 50 Radiant Gems matching your target element. Collect 10 World Tree Holy Water from available World Tree-related sources.

Return to the Ancient Workbench and craft the corresponding Awakening Crystal. Each Crystal has the same basic material requirement: 50 matching Radiant Gems and 10 Holy Water.

Open your inventory, select the completed Awakening Crystal, and choose an eligible Pal of the matching element. Confirm the Awakening. The Crystal is consumed and the upgrade is permanent.

What Awakening actually does to a Pal

An awakened Pal receives a permanent increase to its core stats. The most consistently documented effects are improvements to Health, Attack, and Defense. The Pal also receives a visible awakened appearance, including a glow that makes it easier to identify in the world and a visual change around its level indicator in the menu.

Community testing from July and August 2026 also shows why the upgrade is noticeable on heavily developed Pals. Players have reported substantial increases to HP, Attack, and Defense after awakening fully developed Pals.

There is some conflicting community discussion around whether Awakening affects Work Speed directly. Current player testing suggests you should not treat Awakening as a dedicated Work Speed upgrade, so combat-focused Pals remain the safest priority if your main goal is getting the most practical value from limited Crystals.

How to get Radiant Gems for Awakening Crystals

Radiant Gems are the main resource you will need to farm. The crucial mechanic is that the element of the Radiant Gem corresponds to the Pal that drops it. This means you should decide which Pal you want to awaken before starting a farming session.

If your target is a Dark Pal, concentrate on obtaining Dark Radiant Gems. If your target is a Dragon Pal, farm Dragon-type sources in the World Tree instead. The World Tree is therefore the central location for Awakening material farming.

Because you need 50 matching gems for every Crystal, farming the wrong element can waste a significant amount of time. Check the target Pal’s element first and plan your World Tree run around that requirement.

How to get World Tree Holy Water

World Tree Holy Water is the second ingredient required for every Awakening Crystal. One Crystal needs 10 bottles, so you should keep a reserve rather than spending the material casually.

The system is more forgiving in the current 1.0.3 version. Recent changes increased the usefulness and availability of Holy Water, with additional sources including World Tree expeditions, fishing, the Large Fishing Pond, Teafant Spring, and increased drops from World Tree Pals.

This means you can build up Holy Water while doing other World Tree activities instead of treating every Crystal as a separate dedicated Holy Water grind.

How to choose the best Pal to awaken

Because every Crystal requires 50 Radiant Gems and 10 Holy Water, Awakening is not something you should rush onto the first decent Pal you own. The best target is a Pal you already consider a permanent member of your team.

For a combat Pal, it makes sense to finish the important parts of its development first. That means settling on the species, passives, Potential, level, and Condensation before spending an Awakening Crystal. If you later replace that Pal with a better breeder result, the Crystal used on the old Pal cannot simply be recovered.

Community discussion also supports waiting until you are confident in the Pal you are building rather than worrying about a specific Awakening timing window. Players testing the system have found that awakening earlier or later does not appear to change the eventual Awakening bonus itself, although using the Crystal on your final version avoids wasting the investment on a Pal you later replace.

Awakening Crystal rewards

RewardEffect
Awakened statusPermanently applied to the selected Pal
Health increaseRaises the Pal’s base HP
Attack increaseRaises the Pal’s base Attack
Defense increaseRaises the Pal’s base Defense
Visual auraMakes the awakened Pal visibly identifiable
Elemental specializationCrystal must correspond to the Pal’s eligible element

Dual-element Pals provide an additional decision because they can potentially use a Crystal corresponding to either of their elements. Since a Pal can only be awakened once, it is worth deciding which Crystal gives you the most practical farming value before committing. Community testing specifically notes this consideration for dual-type Pals.

The biggest Awakening mistakes to avoid

The most expensive mistake is using a Crystal on a Pal you are still improving. Awakening is permanent, so breeding a better version afterward does not move the investment to the new Pal.

Another common mistake is farming the wrong Radiant Gem type. The Crystal’s element matters, so always check the target Pal before beginning a long World Tree farming session.

You should also avoid treating Awakening as a replacement for the other Pal progression systems. It is an additional endgame upgrade rather than a substitute for leveling, Condensation, Potential improvements, or good passives. The strongest results come from using Awakening as the final layer on an already-developed Pal.

Why Awakening Crystals are worth farming

Awakening Crystals are primarily designed for players who have reached the late-game stage and want to squeeze more performance out of their best Pals. The material cost is significant, but the permanent nature of the upgrade makes it valuable for long-term combat teams.

The current 1.0.3 changes also make the process less restrictive than it was initially, especially for Holy Water. If you are already spending time in the World Tree, collecting Radiant Gems and Holy Water together gives you a clear progression path toward stronger awakened Pals.
